CPCS Speaker Series: ”Peacemaking in Lebanon”
November 2, 2020
Featuring: Assaad Chaftari, Co-founder and vice president at Fighters for Peace organization, Lebanon. Mr. Assaad will share his personal experience during the Lebanese civil war, his process of redemption and his advice/learning on how to meet the ‘others’. He will provide his story of change from combatant to peace fighter, and the relevance of [or] his case of believing in change when it seems least attainable.

CPCS Speaker Series: Superpower Dialectics: 

October 19, 2020. Mr. Robert Daly is the Director of the Wilson Center’s Kissinger Institute on China and the United States. Recognized in East and West as a leading authority on Sino-U.S. relations, he has testified before Congress, lectured widely in both countries, and regularly offers analysis for top media outlets. He has compiled an unusually diverse portfolio of high-level work: He has served as a U.S. diplomat in Beijing; as an interpreter for Chinese and U.S. leaders; as head of China programs at Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, and the University of Maryland; and as a producer of Chinese-language versions of Sesame Street.

 

 

 

CPCS Speaker Series: Leadership in Social Conflicts September 14, 2020. Featuring Mohammed Dangor. Mohammed Dangor will explore the role of leadership in times of social conflict, and how to build and transform relationships between groups in conflict. He has a long history in the Anti-Apartheid struggle in South Africa and served in the underground movement of the African National Congress. Following the end of Apartheid, Ambassador Dangor represented South Africa in Libya, Syria, and Saudi Arabia, as well as in the African Union. He was a member of the African National Congress Executive (Gauteng Province) from 1994 – 2002 and the South African Civic Association Executive (SANCO). In addition, he was Vice-President for the World Conference on Religion & Peace and has been the recipient of prominent Human Rights awards. Read more.

 

 

Religion in Conflict: Re-Imagining Mediation
December 5, 2019
The team of the CARIM program – a joint initiative of the Center for Security Studies at ETH Zurich and the Human Security Division at the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) –discusses how conflicts with religious dimensions pose challenges for mediation. Drawing on experiences of the Swiss FDFA in contexts such as Tajikistan, Iraq, Morocco and Sri Lanka, the team offers ideas and suggestions for how we can “re-imagine” mediation in order to transform conflicts in these challenging contexts.

The Center for Peace and Conflict Studies welcomes Noura Hamadji, Deputy Assistant Administrator, and Deputy Regional Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa at UNDP to speak with students about the links between peacebuilding and state-building in developing contexts, drawing on comparative knowledge across Africa.
