Join us for our Dr. Marcia Robbins Wilf Lecture

Hearing Jesus’ Parables Through Jewish Ears

Featuring Dr. Amy-Jill Levine
Vanderbilt Divinity School and College of Arts and Science

Sunday, October 26, 2014
3-4:30 p.m.
Jubilee Hall Auditorium

Dr. Amy-Jill Levine is University Professor of New Testament and Jewish Studies, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of New Testament Studies, and Professor of Jewish Studies at Vanderbilt Divinity School and College of Arts and Science. She is also Affiliated Professor, Centre for the Study of Jewish-Christian Relations, Cambridge, UK.

Jesus’ parables were designed to unsettle listeners and prompt them to see the world in a different way. Contemporary interpretations of Jesus’ parables lose their original provocation and the genius of His teaching. These parables require an understanding of Jesus’ Jewish context. How would those short stories by Jesus have been heard by their original Jewish audience, and how might they speak to both Jews and Christians today?

Professor Levine is an engaging speaker and prolific author. Her latest book is titled “Short Stories by Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi.”

Reception to follow the lecture.

This event is free and open to the public through the generosity of the Dr. Marcia Robbins Wilf Lecture Endowment.
