Fashion became popular in New York City especially during the 1900s.Wealthy Women spent a lot of time going shopping in different stores purchasing elaborate outfits. Above is a picture from a window display of a high-end department store in the upper-east side of Manhattan.
China Town

Women in the Workplace
Fanny Fern, the first woman newspaper columnist, wrote articles discussing women’s rights. In “Tyrants Of The Shop”, she shows her sympathy towards working class women. During the nineteenth century, women were usually employed in clothing stores to serve as a seamstress.
Sailor’s Snug Harbor Staten Island
Thoreau mentions “Sailor’s Snug Harbor” in his letter to Helen Thoreau. Opened in 1833, in Richmond Terrace, it became a home for retired merchant seamen.
