Angelica Aceti entered the Higher Education and Student Affairs master’s program at Seton Hall with the desire to gain as much professional experience as possible. In addition to completing two internships, she also worked for the Division of Student Affairs as a research assistant working with student satisfaction surveys. This position provided her the opportunity to work with a variety of departments on campus.

In the summer of 2014, Angelica interned with the Freshman Studies department and assisted with Pirate Adventure. During orientation, she helped students register for their classes, which prepared her for first admissions position. She learned that as one of the first contacts students have with the University, she must be able to field a variety of questions. During the Fall 2014 semester, Angelica interned with Academic Support for Student Athletes, where she handled a caseload of twelve students. This involved meeting with them on a bi-weekly basis to discuss academic progress.  In addition, she maintained communication with her students’ professors. This experience was extremely helpful in improving Angelica’s interpersonal skills and made her more comfortable working with professors.

As a recent graduate of the program in December 2014, Angelica shares her advice for future and current students in the program by encouraging students to “take advantage of where you are – get to know as many people and become familiar with as many departments on campus as possible. Ask people what their day-to-day looks like.  You will learn a great deal from them, and perhaps discover interests you never knew you had.”

Prior to joining the Higher Ed. Master’s program, Angelica studied English, Writing, and Communications at Siena College near Albany, NY. While completing 100 hours of field experience towards a teaching certificate, she realized that was more interested in the topics of education that arose in class discussions than she was in actually teaching in a high school setting. Angelica also recognized she was more interested in higher education than K-12, which was later reaffirmed through study abroad trips.

Angelica is excited to announce that she is starting a new job at Centenary College as an undergraduate Admissions Counselor. She looks forward to traveling in the Northeast to represent the College at high schools and college fairs.  Outside of traveling season, she will be responsible for reviewing applications for undergraduate admissions. Over the 3 years, Angelica has had a diverse set of experiences in higher education. One of the reasons she loves higher education so much is the ability to try on many different hats.  Her longterm goal is to work in institutional research, and she hopes these experiences will prepare her for this role.
