Dr. Hong Liu is Associate Professor in the Academy of Higher Education Studies, Central South University in Changsha, Hunan Province, PRC. She received her PhD in Higher Education from the Institute Of Education Science, Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, one of China’s top 20 universities, in 2003 under Dr. Yingqiang Zhang. Her interests include college and university governance in and outside of China as well as the academic profession.

Since January 15, 2014, Dr. Liu has been serving as a Visiting Scholar in the Department of Education Leadership, Management and Policy at Seton Hall University where she has been systematically reviewing global research on the academic profession and has focused her time on assembling existing survey data and institutional policy documents on junior faculty at the 985 universities in China.

In her presentation, Dr. Liu will provide a portrait of the large cohort of PhDs who have been entering faculty positions in China’s top universities over the past decade, including their educational background and the early career challenges they are facing. She documents as well the revolution in faculty personnel policies, including recruitment, hiring processes, promotion and career development for China’s new academic generation.

The presentation will be followed by opportunities for questions and answers and some light refreshments.
