November 2014: Hilary Boyer Student Spotlight

Over the last year and a half Hilary has been fortunate to not only gain knowledge and experience inside of the classroom, but has been able to learn about higher education and student affairs through internship experiences. As an intern at the Center for Advising and Student Transitions at Montclair State University in the spring of 2014, she was given the opportunity to learn about advising and advise students in both an individual and group setting.

She was also involved with developing sophomore retention programs. Currently she is interning at The Career Center at Seton Hall and at Rutgers University Career Services. Hilary’s ability to complete two career center internships concurrently has provided her with the opportunity to compare and contrast a large, public university career center with a small, private university career center.

Hilary’s education and career goals revolve around knowledge and experience. Through her classes, she is determined to gain knowledge about higher education and strives for good academic performance. As a member of Kappa Delta Pi, she continues to work hard in all of her classes to understand the material and how it will relate to her future career.

Outside of the classroom environment she hopes to continue to gain experience in different departments. Having worked in four different departments at three different universities, she is utilizing her experiences to understand what areas of higher education she is most interested in pursuing. Throughout these experiences, it is her goal to meet with as many people as possible to expand upon her network in higher education.

After graduating next May, Hilary hopes to have already secured a job at a New Jersey college. She is particularly interested in helping students through program development and individual sessions.
