December 2014: Alumni News

Barbara Blozen, Ed.D., 2010 — Associate professor of nursing at New Jersey City University (NJCU), has been appointed to the New Jersey State Board of Nursing by Governor Chris Christie. Her term became effective immediately upon her appointment in November, 2014 and expires in July, 2018. Dr. Blozen joined NJCU as a full-time faculty-member in 2013, after serving the University as an adjunct instructor since 2009. Dr. Blozen is responsible for clinical and theoretical instruction of RN-BSN students as well as advising students and also supervising and evaluating them in patient assessment.

Dr. Blozen’ s published work has appeared in many issues of The American Nurse Today and her article, “The Answer is Questions: Accelerated Nursing Students Report: Practice Questions Are Fundamental to First-Time NCLEX-RN Success,” will soon appear in the Journal of the NYSNA. Dr. Blozen has been a presenter at conferences throughout the world, including, most recently, the Title V 2014 Nurse/Health Sciences Summer Institute, 2013 New Jersey Continuing Education Summit, and International Nursing Research Congresses of Sigma Theta Tau International in Prague and Brisbane.

Dr. Blozen was recently awarded a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant for underrepresented minorities and economically disadvantaged nursing students. Dr. Blozen is also the recipient of a number of nursing awards including the GEM (giving excellence meaning) Award where she progressed to become a national finalist, she was also honored by the Institute for Nursing with the Diva award.

Robert Fallar, Pd.D., 2014 — Appointed to Assistant Professor in the department of Medical Education at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He also presented a poster “Exploration of an Approach to Measure Medical Student Development and Self Authorship” at the Association of American Medical Colleges annual meeting, November 2014. This poster was based on Dr. Fallar’s dissertation research.

Bettina Mason, Ph.D., 2002 — Recently presented two presentations for NJANSA (NJ Assn. of New Student Advocates) via National Resource Center : First Year Experience and Students in Transition: 4th Biennial State Conference for The College Completion Agenda: It starts with the First Year.

Boots to Books: A discussion about Veterans and Military Students within Academia. Dr. Mason co-presented with Ret. Col. Richard Vail, President of the WPU Student Veteran Organization.

The Effect mentoring and Programming Techniques for Ethnic/Cultural Male Groups. She presented with Rev. Dr. Forrest Pritchett, Freshman Mentor and Program Director of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Leadership program at Seton Hall University.
