DOJ seeks research on how law enforcement use social media in their daily operations. They are specifically interested in the following:
- Investigations – How has social media impacted investigations and clearing cases? How can law enforcement use social media to collect evidence and present it in court?
- Situational awareness – How effective is social media at monitoring potential civil disturbances? Can it enhance officer awareness during an evolving situation, like an active shooter?
- Legal issues – What are the legal and ethical ramifications of police use of social media?
- Public outreach – Can social media be used to enhance community-oriented policing activities? Are citizens requesting police assistance via social media and how should law enforcement handle these requests?
