DOJ seeks research on how law enforcement use social media in their daily operations. They are specifically interested in the following:

  • Investigations – How has social media impacted investigations and clearing cases? How can law enforcement use social media to collect evidence and present it in court?
  • Situational awareness – How effective is social media at monitoring potential civil disturbances? Can it enhance officer awareness during an evolving situation, like an active shooter?
  • Legal issues – What are the legal and ethical ramifications of police use of social media?
  • Public outreach – Can social media be used to enhance community-oriented policing activities? Are citizens requesting police assistance via social media and how should law enforcement handle these requests?

Awards typically do not exceed 3 years and $500,000, though there have been exceptions for certain projects. Applications are due April 26, 2013. For more information, see the link below:
