NATO’s SPS program provides grants to enhance cooperation and dialogue between NATO members and partners through multi-year research and development projects, advanced study institutes (ASI), advanced training courses (ATC) and advanced research workshops (ARW). ASIs organize high-level tutorial courses to convey the latest NATO-relevant developments to young postdoctoral scientists. ATCs enable specialists from NATO countries to share their expertise with trainees from NATO partner countries. ARWs organize expert workshops to facilitate high-level discussions and information sharing about today’s most pressing security challenges.

Research priorities are centered around the organization’s strategic objectives, which include:

  • Counter-terrorism
  • Energy Security
  • Cyber Defense
  • Protection Against Chemical, Biological, Radiological & Nuclear (CBRN) Agents
  • Environmental Security
  • Enhance Support for NATO Operations
  • Security Related Advanced Technology
  • Border & Port Security
  • Mine and Unexploded Ordnance Clearance & Detection
  • Human & Social Aspects of Security
