On Thursday, September 29, the new members to the Leadership Development family met Dr. Gerald P. Buccino. At this meeting Dr. Buccino shared his thoughts and insights about leadership based on his life-long learnings and experiences in his exciting professional and personal career journey.

The meeting began with Dr. Buccino asking the students the question: “Is a leader born or made?” The students discussed the importance of nature and nurture when becoming a leader. Dr. Buccino made an important point involving the forming of a leader: mistakes. He said that  making mistakes is a great learning process that will develop you as a leader as it teaches you to cope with mistakes, learn new ways of approaching issues and opening your eyes to new possibilities. This was followed by a highly interactive Q&A session.

Dr. Buccino shared some of his “Buccino-isms” – sayings that capture the rich learning from his leadership journey and which he lives by. The four Buccino-isms he shared with us were:

  • “You have 10 seconds to make an impression, not 11, 10.”
  • “Reaching a goal is not an option… it’s a mandate,”
  • “Every brick wall has a door, only the most determined leaders find it,”
  • “When you think you have done enough… do a little more.”

All of the pieces really resonated with the students, providing them with food for thought on how they will handle the next four years in the Buccino Leadership Development Program.

The students discussed many different subjects throughout the hour, and when Seton Hall came up, everyone could feel the emotions in the room. Dr. Buccino expressed with complete transparency how important Seton Hall really was to him, and how it assisted in the formation of him becoming the successful man he is today. It was a powerful moment for everyone.

The meeting closed with a group picture, and introductions and handshakes from each of the students with Dr. Buccino. Every student left the room with new knowledge about the business world that they didn’t have before.
