Mentors and students of the Women’s Leadership Program gathered for the Fourth Annual Fall Kick-Off Event.

The Women’s Leadership Program (WLP) hosted its Annual Fall Kick-Off Dinner on Thursday, September 29th. We had the opportunity to welcome 35 executive mentors representing 40 different companies, from a variety of industries. These phenomenal executives dedicate their time to grow and develop the Leadership women and prepare them for highly successful professional and personal careers by sharing the learnings and experiences that have shaped their career journey.

We were proud to welcome Mr. Lee Miller, executive coach, author, and corporate trainer on leadership and negotiating as our guest speaker for the evening. Mr. Miller co-authored the book, A Woman’s Guide to Successful Negotiating, with his daughter Jessica. This book was selected by The Huffington Post as one of the “16 Books Aspiring Women Leaders Need to Be Reading.” It was also a featured book on the Early Show and Good Morning America.

Mr. Miller told the audience of executive and Leadership students that the ability to negotiate is one of the most important skills to develop as they move up the career ladder. He stated: “How you get things done in the corporate world is about how you influence and how you negotiate.” As women, we need to learn to stand up and seek the best for ourselves as opposed to what we may view as fair. Mr. Miller shared his motto, or the 3 C’s: Convince, Collaborate, Create. He said that in life and the business world people don’t care how much you know; they know how much you care. Finding things that you are passionate about and conveying that passion to those around you will help you build your reputation as a successful businesswoman.

He left the group with one final piece of advice: go outside your network and go outside the people you regularly deal with. It is important to be involved in professional organizations to meet people who can help you in areas that are different than your own.

The Women’s Leadership Program graciously thanks Mr. Miller for sharing this advice with the executives and students participating e at the kick-off event. We also thank Dean Strawser and Program Director, Mike Reuter, for their continued support in growing the Women’s Leadership Program.
