Taylor Salomon Recognized For Outstanding Service

Taylor Salomon is a sophomore at Seton Hall University studying Mathematical Finance at the Stillman School of Business. As well as being a standout student, she was recently awarded the Outstanding Service Award by the nonprofit Team Walker for her dedication to, and impact on, the organization.

Along with excelling in a rigorous major, Taylor has made a big splash at Seton Hall. She is a distinguished member of The Gerald P. Buccino ’63 Center for Leadership Development as well as a Peer Advisor who mentors incoming students to the University in transitioning them into college.

Her passion for sports has led her to involve herself in Seton Hall’s numerous athletic-related activities such as Pirate Sports Network, Seton Hall Women’s Club Volleyball, WSOU Radio, and the Blue Beard Army.

Along with her extracurricular dedication, she manages to give back to the community consistently. She founded a club that raised money and collected toys and other items for underprivileged children in hospitals. Her passion for helping others led her to get involved initially with Team Walker as an intern.

Team Walker is a Jersey City-based organization founded in 1996 by former basketball standout at St. Anthony High School, Seton Hall University, and international professional basketball player Jerry Walker– and his brother, Jasper Walker. The nonprofit organization offers academic and athletic programs throughout the year to the inner city youth of Jersey City in addition to community outreach programs for families and seniors.

Specifically, Team Walker provides children of all grade levels with certified teachers who facilitate homework tutoring, enrichment & STEM programs, and recreational activities. Through these programs, they strive to teach the “3-Ds” that include Determination, Dedication, and Discipline.

Their mission is to improve the quality of life for the children in Jersey City. As products of the tough streets of the city, the Walker brothers designed Team Walker around youth programs they experienced while growing up crediting these programs for “keeping them off the streets and out of trouble.”

Taylor, along with a dedicated team of interns, quickly made an impact on the organization, reconstructing the Team Walker website, building relationships with partner organizations, drafting grants, and being an overall positive figure for the group.

On the night of January 24, 2018, surrounded by family, loved ones, Seton Hall faculty, and many others from Team Walker, Taylor humbly accepted her Outstanding Service Award. Director of The Gerald P. Buccino ’63 Center for Leadership Development Michael Reuter, Dean of the Stillman School of Business Joyce Strawser, and CEO and founder of Team Walker Jerry Walker all had kind and heartfelt words to share about Taylor’s work ethic, dedication, and passion for doing good in the community.

All of those who spoke shared a prevailing sentiment that Taylor Salomon has done excellent work thus far, and they believe that there is much more to come from her in the future. They agree that Taylor embodies Seton Hall’s motto, “Hazard Zet Forward,” which loosely translates to “no matter what, keep moving forward.”
