On September 12th, 2016 the Class of 2020 met with President Esteban, Dean Joyce Strawser and Mr. Matthew Borowick, Associate Vice President for Alumni & Government Relations. Before the meeting, members of the group engaged in lighthearted conversation with President Esteban about the new-coming developments to Seton Hall, focusing on the new medical campus and the Welcome Center being built here on our very own South Orange campus.

To start off the meeting, Cristina Hill welcomed their guests on behalf of the Class of 2020, highlighting the program’s first international student, Isioma Oye-Oinoka from Nigeria. The conversation began with each guest sharing their expectations of the Leadership Development Class of 2020. Dean Strawser began, highlighting the fact she believes Leadership students need to set the bar high for all Stillman School of Business Students. Mr. Borowick explained to the group the importance of the opportunities given in Leadership and referred to our future experiences as “Being given a gift of time and experience.” Explaining that he hopes one day as alumni, we will give the gift of our time to future students.

President Esteban stated that the Class of 2020 was the most selective in Seton Hall history, with overall SAT scores up 105 points. He shared with the group our new US and World Reports ranking, thrilled that Seton Hall moved up to number 118, exclaiming that  “the table has been set as our future as a University.” He shared his expectation that in fifteen or twenty years that two or more of the Leadership Class of 2020 would be members of the Seton Hall Board of Regents.

There was one question everyone in the room was curious about, asked by Megan Scime and Isioma: “What do you believe sets Leadership students apart?” Dean Strawser began, exclaiming her surprise that somehow every new group of students amaze her with their confidence and poise both in and outside the classroom. She explained that leadership students are the perfect example of “It is not just about doing well; it is doing good,” in regard to their close work with the Valerie Fund and Piratethon. President Esteban also spoke about the inclusiveness of the students, and how they get involved throughout the community and bring their leadership skills with them wherever they go.

The meeting ended with a discussion from all the guests about any simple advice they have for all incoming Freshman, one piece really resonating with all the students. Matthew Borowick said “This program will change your life, if you allow it.” With that thought still in their minds the meeting concluded. The Class of 2020 left the meeting with a sense of the high expectations for the next four years, and they cannot wait to pursue them.
