Three Minute Leadership: On the Meaning of Significance in the Life of a Great Leader

To: The Great Leaders Who Have a Passion for Continuous Learning

A dear friend, a senior executive of a major financial institution, once shared with me a problem with which he was struggling. He said that while he had been very fortunate in life in terms of the great successes he had achieved on his professional and personal journey. He was now faced with “moving from success to significance” in his life. This move reflected his deep spirituality and his desire to give back in thankful gratitude for all that he had been given.

For all great leaders, this same moment arrives when they search and full understanding of the meaning of significance seeks to be understood. May you enjoy the wisdom and beauty of the following thoughts on significance in the great leaders’ journey

“The significance of a man is not in what he attains, but what he longs to attain.” Kahlil Gibran

Significance is when I add value to myself. Significance is when I add value to others.” John Maxwell

“What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is the difference we have made in the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” Nelson Mandela

“The capacity to care is the one thing that gives life its deepest meaning and significance.” Pablo Casals

“Time has no meaning in itself unless we choose to give it significance.” Leo Buscaglia

“Success is winning. Significance is helping others win. Success leaves a fingerprint on creation. Significance leaves a footprint on the soul.” D. Trinidad Hunt

These words speak of a longing for greatness, being value-added and making a difference in all that they do, deep caring for and serving others. With this understanding of significance, we find that great leaders already bring significance to all that they be and do. Their significance is found in a being that they have chosen. And that is part of their continuing magnificent legacy. Continue to build your legacy as you become more than you ever dreamed you could be in all that you do, in all that you are.

Have a beautiful day and a magnificent week!!!
