On Friday January 15th, the team traveled to Verizon in Basking Ridge, NJ for the second Leadership 102 trip of the academic year. Seniors Brian Mitchell and Anthony Pescetto, junior Vina Tailor, and sophomore Jeffery Joyce worked with John Boylan, Anali Lins, and Noelle Albanito to plan a day of learning and exploration at the headquarters.

The day began with introductions from the team as well as John, Anali, and Noelle. The three executives emphasized the importance of having a career development plan and explained how Verizon strives at pointing its employees on the right path to success. The students also heard from other executives as well including Claudia Healy and Sowmyanarayan Sampath. Claudia as VP of talent acquisition gave important advice for personal branding to the team both in our professional and personal lives. Sampath as Senior Vice President of Business Transformation described his methods for dealing with disruption outside of Verizon and gave the team advice on how to conquer disruption whether internal or external.

The team then got an in depth tour of the Verizon headquarters from various interns and executives. One of the stand out points from the tour was the internal design that placed an emphasis on an open forum style of work that has made the employees of Verizon more efficient by encouraging the collaboration amongst employees. Another standpoint of the tour was Verizon’s TV studios which allowed the students to see the process of Verizon’s creative branding. The day concluded with an interactive activity with John Boylan and the team called “Verizon MAAP”. In this activity students walked away with a better knowledge of the history of Verizon as well as its expansion beyond just being a cellular carrier.

We would like to thank the entire team at Verizon for hosting the team as well as Leadership 102 for organizing this event. It was a great learning experience for both the students and the executives!
