Three Minute Leadership: Dream Bigger, Aim Higher in 2015
To: The Great Leaders Who Have a Passion for Continuous Learning
“The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals.” writes author, Melody Beattie. Excited by another magnificent year of great learnings, achievement and personal and professional growth, great leaders anxiously, and with deep reflection, prepare for the exciting next steps of their life’s journey. They reflect on the words of self-help author Tony Robbins: “Setting goals is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible.” They move excitedly to take the first step.
Discussing 2015 goal-setting in his article, Dream Bigger, Aim Higher in 2015, Philip Humbert, leadership author and coach, provides advice to great leaders as they think about the coming years. Many people adopt an incremental approach to their goal-setting (a 10% increase in productivity/results; minor adjustments to their own or their organization’s growth and development). Of this he says: “There’s nothing wrong with it, except that it doesn’t work. For many of us, ‘raising the bar’ and doing more of the same is not what we truly want. It doesn’t challenge or excite us because it’s simply not ‘enough.’”
For great leaders, he counsels: “But I’m challenging you to think bigger and aim higher. As you look to 2015 and beyond, what do you really WANT for your life? What’s the REAL story? What’s your DREAM? What are you doing with your life? Don’t settle for more of the same, a few more dollars or an extra week of vacation if you really want to create memories, take chances, and to ‘live with passion!’”
What will success look like in your being and doing look like on December 31, 2015? Choose it to be a mosaic of magnificence. Be bodacious in your goal-setting! Dream dreams undreamed, stretch and push yourself, your organization and those whom you serve to new levels of excellence that together we become more than we ever dreamed we could be… and more… so much more.
Happy New Year, my very dear friends! May it be our best year ever. Life is so very good.
Have a beautiful day and a magnificent year!!!
Mike
