Class of 2018 Presidential Meeting

Each year, the Stillman Business School and the Center for Leadership Development welcomes the newest group of future leaders: the freshman class. In the early weeks of the program, the class is extended the customary hand of community and support through a meeting with President of the University, Dr. A. Gabriel Esteban, Dean of the Stillman Business School, Dean Joyce Strawser, and Associate Vice President of Alumni and Government Relations, Mr. Matthew Borowick. This year, that meeting took place on the tenth of September in Stillman’s ground-floor conference room.

As each of the class’ guests arrived, they were greeted with smiles, handshakes, and excited conversation. Director of the Leadership Development Honors Program, Michael Reuter, gave opening remarks. He expressed the Freshman team’s excitement at having such distinguished guest join them and providing them with an opportunity to learn from some of Seton Hall’s most distinguished servant leaders. The conversation was then turned over to Mikaela Milano. Ms. Milano supplemented Mr. Reuter’s introduction by vocalizing the team’s gratitude.

After introductions around the table, the first question was posed by Kathleen Yeckley: “What advice would you give us as we begin our university careers?” Dr. Esteban first took the opportunity to first welcome the team to Seton Hall and advised the freshman to be aware of and explore the vast opportunities for learning and service on campus. The conversation continued on a wide range of subjects, from classes to travel to alumni to possible future ventures for the Stillman School of Business. A great emphasis was put on real-world application of both undergraduate and graduate education. “When an MBA student leaves that night,” said Dean Strawser, “we hope to give the something that can be applied in the workplace in the morning.” Continuing on in that thought, Mr. Borowick added that an education at “[Seton Hall] prepared [alumni] holistically.” Those who left Seton Hall have made, and continue to make, a difference.

Such was the expectations delivered by President Esteban. “I expect everyone here to be a servant leader.” Being a servant leader, he continued, involves “the willingness to put others above yourself.”

With such an expectation in mind, the meeting came to its conclusion. The Leadership Class of 2018 took away a wonderful experience and look forward to pursuing their own legacy and entering the world as Seton Hall alumni and the newest servant leaders.
