Launched in 2011 as a key initiative of Intersections International\u2019s Global Peacemaking Program, the U.S.-Pakistan Interreligious Coalition (UPIC), originated as a nonpartisan interreligious alliance consisting of religious, academic and community leaders from over fifty Pakistani and American civil society organizations.<\/p>\n

History and Guiding Principles<\/h1>\t \t \r\n

While U.S.-Pakistan relations have been tumultuous since the Islamic Republic of Pakistan\u2019s birth as a country in 1947, our two nations have witnessed an increase in religious intolerance in the past decade. Islamophobia in the United States of America and discrimination against Christians and other minorities in Pakistan have grown, often with violent consequences.<\/p>\t \t \r\n

Launched in 2011 as a key initiative of Intersections International\u2019s Global Peacemaking Program, the U.S.-Pakistan Interreligious Consortium (UPIC), originated as a nonpartisan interreligious alliance consisting of religious, academic and community leaders from over fifty Pakistani and American civil society organizations. The value of UPIC over time lies in the recognition that faith cannot be excluded from the sensibilities of the overwhelming majority of U.S. and Pakistani populations. This driving force has guided UPIC to find a new home at Seton Hall University\u2019s School of Diplomacy and International Relations as a project of the Center for United Nations and Global Governance Studies.<\/p>\t \t \r\n

Using track two diplomacy, face-to-face interpersonal engagement and academic partnerships, UPIC provides a concrete, constructive and interfaith model for study and action that regularly brings together religious leaders, community organizers, scholars and students from the United States and Pakistan (and some from third-party nations) to address three objectives:<\/p>\t \t \r\n

    \t \t \r\n
  • building relationships across national borders;<\/li>\t \t\u00a0\r\n
  • altering destructive and inaccurate stereotypes promulgated by the media, divisive political agendas and corporate interests that benefit from erecting barriers between our two countries; and<\/li>\t \t \r\n
  • creating and implementing sustainable programs that:\t \t \r\n
      \t \t \r\n
    • transcend borders, boundaries, ethnic strife and religious prejudice, and<\/li>\t \t \r\n
    • improve the lives of everyday Pakistanis and their social and political involvement by enhancing human rights, women\u2019s empowerment, economic development, labor rights and child welfare.<\/li>\t \t \r\n<\/ul>\t \t \r\n<\/li>\t \t \r\n<\/ul>\t \t \r\n

      A key component in UPIC\u2019s work is dialogue with an emphasis on listening to \u201cthe other.\u201d Courageous conversations are encouraged, not avoided, thereby creating multiple occasions where the differences between Pakistan and the U.S. can be considered.
