World Interfaith Harmony Week | 1 – 7 February 2019<\/strong>
\nWorld Interfaith Harmony Week<\/a> was proclaimed by the General Assembly in 2010. In the resolution, the General Assembly, points out that mutual understanding and interreligious dialogue constitute important dimensions of a culture of peace and establishes World Interfaith Harmony Week as a way to promote harmony between all people regardless of their faith. It is imperative that we double our efforts to spread the message of good neighborliness based on our common humanity, a message shared by all faith traditions. The theme for the observance of the Interfaith Harmony Week for 2019 is \u201cSustainable Development through Interfaith Harmony.\u201d

Podcast on the Opioid Crisis<\/strong>
\nOpioids account for over three-quarters of deaths associated with prescription drug misuse. In late January, David Sheff and Vicky Cornell joined a panel discussion on addiction organised by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime<\/a> (UNODC). Mr. Sheff\u2019s memoir about his son\u2019s addiction has been turned into a major Hollywood movie, and Ms. Cornell was married to Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, whose suicide she has attributed to prescription drugs that altered his mental state.<\/p>\n

Conor Lennon from UN News interviewed Mr. Sheff and Ms. Cornell for this episode of The Lid Is On<\/a>, and heard how their experiences have led them to believe that changes to the health care system play a key role in addressing the crisis.<\/p>\n

Call for nominations for the Equator Prize 2019<\/strong>
\nThe Equator Prize 2019 will be awarded to outstanding community and indigenous initiatives that are advancing nature-based solutions for local sustainable development. Each winning group will receive USD 10,000 and will be invited to participate in a series of policy dialogues and special events during the United Nations General Assembly and the Secretary-General\u2019s Climate Summit in New York in September 2019, culminating in a high-level award ceremony at the beginning of Climate Week.<\/p>\n

UN Exhibit: Lives Cut Short: Seeking Refuge During the Holocaust – On display starting 16 January 2019<\/strong><\/p>\n

Through the story of young Holocaust victim, Ruth Maier, this exhibition portrays the broader history of the Jewish refugees\u2019 search for safety during the Holocaust. It shows the courage and desperate choices Jewish parents made to keep their children alive. Ruth\u2019s diaries and writings provide a searing testimony of creative promise destroyed through the actions of the Nazis and their collaborators and supporters.<\/p>\n

UN Exhibit: Beyond Duty – On display starting 16 January 2019<\/strong>
\nThis exhibition relates the unique stories of dozens of diplomats from the Holocaust period who have been recognized by Yad Vashem,\u202fthe World Holocaust Remembrance Center, as Righteous Among the Nations. Presented in connection with the 2019 Holocaust Commemoration, the exhibit is dedicated to all Righteous Among the Nations, and the Holocaust survivors whose courage and resilience inspire all.
