On 24 October 2017, the United Nations (UN) celebrated its 72nd<\/sup> Birthday. UN was created in 1945 when the global community came together to create UN and prevent World War III from captivating the world. Why does UN celebrate its birthday on 24 October? UN Charter<\/a> entered into force on 24 October 1945, after being ratified by majority of its signatories. Since 1948, UN started a tradition to celebrate its birthday on 24 October. Happy 72nd<\/sup> birthday, United Nations!<\/p>\n

Message by Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres<\/a>:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cOur world faces many grave challenges.<\/p>\n

Widening conflicts and inequality.<\/p>\n

Extreme weather and deadly intolerance.<\/p>\n

Security threats \u2013 including nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n

We have the tools and wealth to overcome these challenges. All we need is the will.<\/p>\n

The world\u2019s problems transcend borders.<\/p>\n

We have to transcend our differences to transform our future.<\/p>\n

When we achieve human rights and human dignity for all people \u2013 they will build a peaceful, sustainable and just world.<\/p>\n

The 2017 SG\u2019s Awards ceremony<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Deputy-Secretary-General Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, on behalf of the Secretary-General, presented the awards in the ECOSOC Chamber. This year\u2019s categories are: Innovation and Creativity; Implementing Efficiencies; Gender Equality and Parity; and Champion of the SDGs. The finalists in each category will be featured in a video highlighting their achievements. Deputy-Secretary-General Ms. Amina J. Mohammed, on behalf of the Secretary-General, presented the awards in the ECOSOC Chamber.\u00a0Watch her opening remarks here<\/a>.<\/p>\n

UN Day Concert<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in the General Assembly Hall, featuring the Slovak National Folklore Ballet, L\u00fa\u010dnica.<\/em><\/p>\n

The theme of this year’s concert is “Potential in Diversity” and is sponsored by the Permanent Mission of the Slovak Republic to the United Nations.<\/p>\n
