31 days of promoting a better urban future. Today 55 per cent of the world’s population live in cities and towns and the number is growing every day. Every October UN-Habitat and partners organize a month of activities, events and discussions on urban sustainability. 2018 was the most successful Urban October on record with a total of 61 countries and 107 cities marking World Habitat Day and World Cities Day, and hosting events to celebrate Urban October.

World Cities Day
The United Nations General Assembly designated every 31st October as World Cities Day (WCD).The global observation of World Cities Day 2019 will be hosted by Ekaterinburg, in the Russian Federation. The theme is “Changing the world: innovations and better life for future generations”. World Cities Day promotes sustainable, inclusive urbanization around the world and engenders international cooperation to address the challenges of urbanization. Urbanization is happening at a phenomenal rate. Half the world’s population now live in cities, and this is projected to increase to two-thirds by 2050.

Why it Matters: Updates on Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 2
In Focus: Globally, the number of people living in extreme poverty – on US $1.90 a day – has dropped massively, from 36% in 1990 to 10% in 2015. But the pace of poverty reduction is slowing down and current projections suggest that 6% of the world’s population will still be living in extreme poverty in 2030, missing the target of the first Sustainable Development Goal.

After this year’s Climate Action Summit, what happens next?
People across the world need to embrace “fundamental change” in order to combat climate change and meet the target of restricting the increase in global temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius, Claudio Forner, from UN Climate Change in Bonn, told UN News in an interview that took place following the Climate Action Summit.”

WHO: World Report on Vision
The World Health Organization published the World Report on Vision, a detailed analysis of the ever-growing disparities in eye care, accessibility, and sight. The report focuses on strengthening health care systems to provide adequate and accessible care to address Sustainable Development Goal 3: Universal Healthcare. “At least 2.2 billion people have vision impairment or blindness, of which over 1 billion cases could have been prevented or have yet to be addressed” The executive summary can be found here.

UNSD: The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2019
The United Nations Statistic’s Division published the annual sustainable development report outlining global progress towards the development goals. The report discusses global initiatives and efforts taken to achieve each of the 17 sustainable goals. The report also highlights areas for improvement, and stresses the urgency behind collective approaches toward social and economic transformation in order to achieve a sustainable world.
