Google trends on searches for “United Nations”

Our blogpost this week is a simple data visualization from Google Trends. In case you were curious about who is using the internet to search for information using the term “United Nations,” the image below represents changes in search volume by country over time. We know that internet penetration rates vary tremendously by region, and that while 16 people out of 100 are internet users in Africa, that number climbs to 75 out of 100 in Europe.

As the figure below suggests, the search volumes seem to be much higher in Africa than elsewhere in the world. Ascertaining the link between UN field offices, UN programs and search volumes might tell us a great deal about who is googling whom.
