Al-Qaeda\u2019s second in command, Abu Muhammad al-Masri, was confirmed to have been shot and killed in Tehran, Iran, on\u00a0August\u00a07, reports The New York Times<\/a>, citing U.S. intelligence officials. Four of these officials also confirmed that the attack was executed by Israeli operatives on behalf of the United States. Al-Masri\u2019s death comes on the anniversary of the deadly 1998 al-Qaeda attacks on U.S. embassies in Africa, which al-Masri reportedly helped mastermind.\u00a0The New York Times report states that al-Masri\u00a0was killed\u00a0along with his daughter Miriam, who was the widow of Osama bin Laden\u2019s son, Hamza bin Laden.<\/p>\n

The U.S. is known to have been tracking the movements of al-Masri\u00a0and other\u00a0al-Qaeda operatives in Iran for years, however,\u00a0it remains unclear how large a role the U.S. played in the operation, reports\u00a0The New York Times.\u00a0The killing of al-Masri\u2019s\u00a0was rumored, but not confirmed until now, three months later.\u00a0Despite the recent reports,\u00a0al-Qaeda\u00a0has not confirmed\u00a0the death of one of its top leaders.\u00a0Both\u00a0Israel\u00a0and\u00a0the U.S.\u00a0have\u00a0avoided\u00a0publicly claiming\u00a0responsibility for the attack, The New York Times furthers.<\/p>\n

Iran has denied reports that al-Masri\u00a0was killed in Tehran. Iran\u2019s foreign ministry has claimed that the report was false, stating, \u201cFrom time to time, Washington and Tel Aviv try to tie Iran to such groups by lying and leaking false information to the media in order to avoid responsibility for the criminal activities of this group and other terrorist groups in the region,\u201d reports BBC News<\/a>. This was furthered by one of Iran\u2019s foreign ministry spokesman, Saeed\u00a0Khatibzadeh, who denied \u201cany presence of\u00a0al-Qaeda\u201d members in Iran, reports The New York Times<\/a><\/p>\n

After the story of the shooting of al-Masri\u00a0broke, state media in Iran identified the victims of the shooting as Lebanese history professor Habib Daoud and his daughter Maryam, according to Al Jazeera<\/a>.\u00a0It is believed that Daoud\u00a0was\u00a0a member of Hezbollah, the\u00a0Iranian backed armed\u00a0political\u00a0group in Lebanon\u00a0that is\u00a0in constant conflict with Israel,\u00a0explains\u00a0Al\u00a0Jazeera.\u00a0However,\u00a0The New York Times reports\u00a0that\u00a0Daoud was an alias that Iranian officials gave to al-Masri\u00a0and\u00a0that\u00a0his\u00a0teaching job was a cover to prevent suspicion.<\/p>\n

The initial report from The\u00a0New York Times\u00a0said that Iran\u2019s motive for keeping al-Qaeda seniors members as hostages, despite being bitter enemies, might have been to ensure that the group would not conduct operations against the Iranian government or on its home soil. Another reason may have been to prevent\u00a0al-Qaeda running operations against the United States.<\/p>\n

Many analysts, including Ali Soufan at the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point, saw al-Masri as the potential successor to al-Qaeda\u2019s current leader, Ayman al-Zawahiri, who is in poor health, according to CNN<\/a>. Ali Soufan, a former FBI investigator and an expert on al-Qaeda, sees this as a clear loss for the terrorist group. Soufan states that, \u201cThroughout its existence, whenever al-Qaeda has evolved, Abu Muhammad al-Masri has been at the forefront of the change\u2026 al-Qaeda have lost one of their founding fathers and their most experienced and capable operational planner,\u201d according to CNN.<\/p>\n

A new era may be dawning, according to some\u00a0American analysts,\u00a0who speculate that\u00a0al-Masri\u2019s\u00a0death\u00a0could sever the remaining threads between the few remaining original leaders of\u00a0al-Qaeda and the new generation of Islamist militants, who have grown up after the death of Osama bin Laden in 2011, according to\u00a0The New York Times.\u00a0The\u00a0death\u00a0of al-Masri\u00a0could contribute\u00a0to\u00a0the further decentralization of the organization. It could also change al-Qaeda\u2019s\u00a0relationship with Iran, who continues to hold other leaders\u00a0of the organization hostage in Tehran.\u00a0The full effects of this incident will have\u00a0important\u00a0implications for both the survival of al-Qaeda and its future operations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
