Paul Rusesabagina, the man whose story\u00a0inspired the\u00a0Academy Award-nominated\u00a02004 \u00a0film \u201cHotel Rwanda,\u201d has been arrested on charges of terrorism in his native country of Rwanda, according to\u00a0CNN<\/a>.\u00a0The Rwandan government\u00a0alleges\u00a0that he is the \u201cfounder, leader,\u00a0and sponsor of violent, armed, extremist terror outfits,\u201d\u00a0accused of\u00a0perpetrating\u00a0a series of\u00a0rural\u00a0attacks\u00a0in the summer of 2018.\u00a0News of his arrest only broke after\u00a0Rwandan police and security officials\u00a0publicly\u00a0displayed\u00a0him\u00a0in\u00a0Rwanda\u2019s capital, Kigali,\u00a0at the end of August.<\/p>\n

Rusesabagina\u2019s arrest\u00a0and appearance as a prisoner\u00a0in Rwanda are shocking\u00a0developments. As an outspoken critic of Rwandan President Paul Kagame, Rusesabagina has purposely avoided\u00a0returning to his\u00a0native\u00a0country since he fled in 1996 following a failed assassination attempt, explains\u00a0The New York Times<\/a>.\u00a0He was reportedly tricked into returning to Rwanda with a ruse coordinated by Rwandan intelligence services.\u00a0In August,\u00a0Rusesabagina left his current home in San Antonio, Texas under the impression that he was\u00a0traveling\u00a0to give a speech\u00a0at\u00a0a friend\u2019s church in Burundi, Rwanda\u2019s southern neighbor.\u00a0After a layover in Dubai, he boarded a private jet, which was sent for him,\u00a0expecting\u00a0to\u00a0be taken to his intended destination in Bujumbura, Burundi.\u00a0The private jet,\u00a0operated\u00a0by a Greek company which is frequently used\u00a0by\u00a0President Kagame, secretly flew to Kigali instead of Rusesabagina\u2019s Burundian destination.\u00a0Once\u00a0the plane\u00a0landed, Rusesabagina reports being physically bound, detained, and interrogated\u00a0for a few days before his arrest was made public.<\/p>\n

Since the release of \u201cHotel Rwanda,\u201d Rusesabagina\u00a0has\u00a0been praised as a\u00a0human rights activist, winning the American Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is\u00a0an\u00a0ardent critic of long-time Rwandan President Kagame and is the leader of\u00a0an opposition party,\u00a0the\u00a0Rwandan Movement for Democratic Change\u00a0(MRCD),\u00a0according to\u00a0Al\u00a0Jazeera<\/a>.\u00a0The MRCD is\u00a0associated with an armed wing called the National Liberation\u00a0Front (FLN).\u00a0According to the\u00a0Guardian<\/a>, the Rwandan government has blamed cells of the FLN for\u00a0carrying out a\u00a0series of terrorist attacks in rural Rwanda in 2018 that left\u00a09\u00a0dead and many injured.\u00a0Due to his\u00a0involvement with the MRCD\/FLN and the emergence of a\u00a0video taken months after these horrific attacks,\u00a0in which Rusesabagina\u00a0calls for \u201cchange by any means,\u201d the Rwandan government\u00a0is convinced of his guilt and\u00a0his\u00a0direct involvement\u00a0with these attacks.<\/p>\n

Rusesabagina\u2019s family\u00a0maintains\u00a0his innocence, explaining his recent arrest by pointing\u00a0to President Kagame\u2019s long history of silencing\u00a0political\u00a0opponents and personal enemies\u00a0through the weight of the Rwandan government.\u00a0According to\u00a0NPR<\/a>,\u00a0President Kagame continuously works to dismantle the democratic institutions of Rwanda,\u00a0including freedom of the press\u00a0and freedom of speech.\u00a0Over the last ten years, multiple critics of the Kagame regime have mysteriously\u00a0turned up dead,\u00a0both within Rwanda and abroad.<\/p>\n

Rusesabagina, the man who, according to the\u00a0BBC<\/a>, saved the lives of over 1,200 people using his job as a hotelier at an expensive Belgian-owned hotel during the 1994 Rwandan genocide, is currently awaiting what President Kagame vowed would be a fair and public trial in Kigali.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
