{"id":9344,"date":"2020-08-28T12:53:47","date_gmt":"2020-08-28T16:53:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/thediplomaticenvoy\/?p=9344"},"modified":"2021-02-10T19:56:51","modified_gmt":"2021-02-11T00:56:51","slug":"black-excellence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/thediplomaticenvoy\/2020\/08\/28\/black-excellence\/","title":{"rendered":"Black Excellence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Justin Morris<br \/>\n<\/strong><em><strong>Contributor<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This is excellence.<br \/>\nBlack excellence.<br \/>\nThis excellence is ever prevalent, always relevant<br \/>\nPure effervescence, a glowing sentiment<br \/>\nOf God\u2019s gift from above, it\u2019s heaven sent<br \/>\nI could be a lawyer, judge, even President.<br \/>\nThis is excellence.<br \/>\nAn excellence that makes cops kill just for the hell of it<br \/>\nCreates for us a world of pestilence<br \/>\nTurns my sleep into restlessness<br \/>\nMakes me wonder, is this heaven sent?<br \/>\nAnd they say the present is a gift, if it\u2019s a present then<br \/>\nWhy do I feel like I\u2019ve been to hell and back again?<br \/>\nWhy does this excellence make me feel like a peasant?<br \/>\nWhy am I being followed around this seven-eleven?<br \/>\nWhy am I being thrown into this figurative lion\u2019s den?<br \/>\nWhy am I forced to constantly wonder when\u2026<br \/>\nAt times I question the benefits of this sentiment<br \/>\nWhat about this can be benevolent?<br \/>\nThis cycle seems endless<br \/>\nBut can you can never end this<br \/>\nBlack excellence.<br \/>\nAnd that\u2019s why I\u2019ll continue to pen this,<br \/>\nAnd send this, extend this message<br \/>\nOf deep depression and of my people<br \/>\nWho\u2019ve been enslaved since their first impression.<br \/>\nI\u2019m forced to question everyday<br \/>\nWill I become another lesson?<br \/>\nTo young boys in this country to comply and shut your mouth when talking to the police<br \/>\nIf you want to avoid any transgressions.<br \/>\nNo.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s time we start addressing this problem<br \/>\nOr we\u2019ll continue digressing as a people, when we need to start progressing.<br \/>\nAnd no we can\u2019t control our circumstance<br \/>\nBut we control what we create<br \/>\nWe control the food we put on our plate<br \/>\nWe control how long we chose to wait<br \/>\nA mind is a terrible thing to waste they say<br \/>\nSo can we please take haste in our hate for each other<br \/>\nAnd learn to appreciate our brothers and sisters<br \/>\nIt\u2019s the only way we\u2019ll be great.<br \/>\nThis is excellence.<br \/>\nAnd soon our queens and kings will sing let freedom ring<br \/>\nAs hope brings light to every living thing<br \/>\nThis is excellence.<br \/>\nBlack excellence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Justin Morris Contributor\u00a0 This is excellence.
