Since COVID-19 first entered the collective consciousness of media and society,\u202fpeople far and wide continue to spread\u202fall\u202finformation they can gather on the virus. Unfortunately, whether maliciously intended or not, this has led to the widespread dissemination of misinformation\u202fon a\u202fviral\u202fscale. The fear and paranoia around the globe indicate not only the dangers of the viral pandemic but a worldwide \u201cinfodemic\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr. Claire Wardle, a\u202fleading expert in the field of social media and user-generated content,\u202fstates in an <\/span>Aspen Institute<\/span><\/a> webinar that\u202fthis \u201cinfodemic\u201d has taken shape in a couple of trends worldwide. For one, most of the viral content that has been spread\u202fassuredly contains some truth regarding COVID-19. Secondly,\u202fshe notes that information\u202fhas\u202ftraveled most popularly\u202fin closed and semi-closed\u202fsocial\u202fspaces. These can\u202ftake\u202fthe form of small groups like family and relatives, coworkers, and friends to larger groups like those on Facebook,\u202fTwitter,\u202fWhatsapp, and similar platforms.\u202fCombined, these two factors create a dangerous environment that warps the validity and accuracy of information.\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Misinformation on COVID-19 penetrates all topics on the virus, from disinformation (deliberately harmful information) on the virus\u2019s origins to misinformation about the virus\u2019s spread, symptoms, and treatments. Stories range\u202ffrom Chinese biological weapons\u202fprograms\u202fto intentionally spread by\u202fthe\u202fU.S. military and\u202feven\u202fBill Gates\u2019 involvement in pharmaceutical production as a front for surveillance and profit.\u202fAs tensions grow among\u202fdifferent state actors, people question the politics of pandemics, sowing doubt\u202fbehind the efficacy of official actions and government agendas, according to <\/span>The Economist<\/span><\/a>.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Misinformation\u202falso\u202faffects both social\u202fand economic behaviors.\u202fThese viral campaigns utilize\u202fa number of\u202fpsychological \u201cbackfire effects\u201d,\u202fclouding the truth from society and inhibiting the work of health officials<\/span>.\u202f<\/b>\u202fFor example, the repetition of media falsehoods establishes\u202fa level of familiarity between consumers and inaccurate information. As\u202f<\/span>NBC<\/span><\/a>‘s Ruaridh\u202fArrow reports, some companies resort to false advertising and upselling\u202ftoxic chemical\u202fto\u202fmake a profit. Chloroquine, a drug for malaria, is not proven to work against COVID-19 and its phosphate equivalent is\u202ftoxic to humans, used in aquariums\u202fto treat fish. However, this has not stopped consumers from purchasing the chemical and experimenting with self-treatment.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n

\u202fSimilarly, hearsay typically dominates Facebook and\u202fWhatsapp, as\u202funwary\u202fpeople fall victim to\u202fmass gossip. Whether it comes from \u201cfriends\u201d\u202fof government officials or \u201crelatives\u201d of health workers, mass rumors\u202fhave only added more confusion and uncertainty to the COVID-19 narrative.\u202fData analysts on social media have\u202fseveral international similarities in the types of misinformation being disseminated.\u202fStories about \u201clocal\u201d outbreaks, home treatments, and diagnoses share similar patterns in different languages,\u202fsuggesting there are dedicated groups maliciously spreading rumors internationally.\u202fMost importantly, the spread of rumors and misinformation has\u202fincited levels of mass panic that poses a great danger to society.\u202fMost media outlets like <\/span>Time<\/span><\/a>\u00a0have covered the numerous \u201ctoilet paper epidemics\u201d worldwide, which initially seem humorous. However, these developments point to a more dangerous precedent\u202fof supply shortages, not only in toilet paper, but in medicine, masks, and other materials essential to health workers. The financial\u202fworld has equally been shaken up by COVID-19 developments, inciting similar panic in would-be investors and average people.\u202fParticularly provocative disinformation has\u202fupset the stock market\u202falready but\u202fcan also influence runs on bank and questionable financial decisions across the board, as <\/span>CNN<\/span><\/a> predicts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

So,\u202ftwo questions remain:\u202fHow can professionals and officials with the right insights convey their information without being drowned out by ubiquitous media? And similarly, how can one properly inform themselves during this time of social isolation without experiencing the pitfalls of mis- and disinformation?\u202fThe reason why\u202fmisinformation and\u202fgroups\u202fwith specific agendas,\u202flike the anti-vaxxer movement,\u202fare so successful\u202fis because of provocative, yet easily understandable content. Memes that\u202fup to play or downplay the\u202fvirus\u2014or even colorful\u202fgraphics\u202fthat seem to disprove well-known facts\u2014are more likely to make an impact on\u202freaders. Despite\u202fthe existence of dependable research, correct\u202finformation\u202foften\u202fstruggles to come to light because of lengthy, medical jargon-ridden reports,\u202fwhich are hard to access for the everyday media consumer.\u202fDr. Wardle unapologetically calls us \u201clizard-brained\u201d, meaning individuals value data that is concise, digestible, and often in infographic form.\u202fGovernment and health officials should strive to create content and data that is easily readable and readily available for the common person. If\u202fauthorities can assert themselves on social media and more relatable platforms, people can be\u202fmore informed\u202fand restore their faith in status quo research.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet these standards should also be met on the consumer side of things. When looking at published data, whether formally in scientific research or informally through different sources of\u202fmedia, people should be aware of underlying facts, different sources of information,\u202fand the pitfalls of\u202fpsychological backfire effects.\u202fWhen spreading awareness for different issues, people should be careful to fact-check alongside reliable and officially published data first before sharing.\u202fNevertheless, there can be some reassurance knowing that there are kernels of truth to everything and piecing them together is the first step to becoming informed.\u202fRecognizing that knowledge is power, we can do our part in fighting\u202fagainst this\u202finfodemic\u202fand the\u202fCOVID-19 pandemic\u202foverall.\u202f\u202f\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
