According to the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/death-toll-christchurch-mosque-attacks-grows-51-after-turkish-man-n1001476\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">, the 29<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">year<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">old Australian man traveled to two mosques, opening fire while people watched on social media. The attacks left 51 dead and 49 dead, resulting in charges of murder, attempted murder, and terrorism.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Despite the shooter posting both his livestream of the attack and his manifesto attempting to justify it online,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the case was dragged on for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">more\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">than one year\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">without a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ny<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0conviction. The trial, originally scheduled for May 4, 2020, was delayed by the High Court of New Zealand to June 2, 2020 to avoid conflict with Ramadan in consideration of the Muslim witnesses testifying,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/09\/zealand-delays-christchurch-mosque-shooting-trial-190912093236778.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Aljazeera<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0reported.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The perpetrator, characterized by Australia&#8217;s Prime Minister Scott Morrison as an \u201cextremist, right-wing, violent terrorist,\u201d attempted to further alter the trial\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">by<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0requesting a change in trial location. While the trial was planned to take place in Christchurch, the city<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0in which<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> the atrocity was committed in, the defendant requested it be held in Auckland, a city 475 miles north of Christchurch, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/10\/02\/world\/australia\/christchurch-suspect-trial.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. The request was withdrawn at a preliminary hearing in October, but survivors were then dismayed by the behavior of the perpetrator.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2019\/10\/zealand-mosque-shooting-suspect-drops-bid-move-trial-191003012031274.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Aljazeera<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0describes how\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the shooter -who appeared in court through video conferencing- looked<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0remorseless<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">smirking<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and winking throughout<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0the hearing.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">However, on March 19, 2020, the shooter digitally appeared in court again<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">with a limited audience due to the COVID-19 pandemic<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/mar\/26\/christchurch-shooting-brenton-tarrant-pleads-guilty-to-new-zealand-mosque-attacks-that-killed-51\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. In a surprising change of circumstances, the former gym instructor pleaded guilty on every account. The June 2 trial has been canceled\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">in light of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0this change, bringing relief to families of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">victims and witnesses who no longer must relive<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0through<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0their trauma.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">In an interview with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/mar\/26\/christchurch-shooting-brenton-tarrant-pleads-guilty-to-new-zealand-mosque-attacks-that-killed-51\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Maysoon<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0Salama, mother of one of the deceased, described both her shock and relief. \u201cThe news is fresh an<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0it\u2019s unbelievable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0really,\u201d said Salama. Other family members and victims discussed that they were not even aware of the hearing until they heard of the guilty plea. Salama furthered that she was unsure\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">whether or not<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to believe the play, as the gunman has consistently treated the justice system \u201clike a game.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Even with his guilty plea, the actions of the Christchurch shooter on March 15, 2019 have fundamentally changed New Zealand. A month after the shooting occurred, New Zealand\u2019s parliament voted in a 119<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">1 decision to ban semi-automatic weapons, according to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/04\/10\/asia\/new-zealand-gun-law-reform-intl\/index.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CNN<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\">. Beyond legislation,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Ti<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">m<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">es<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0describes how within the past year the non-Muslim population in New Zealand has made an extra effort to reach out to and engage the Muslim community, bringing the nation together.\u202f<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Even though Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0canceled\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a memorial for victims of the shooting due to fears of COVID-19, dozens flocked to the Al<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">&#8211;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Noor mosque anyway. People from a variety of cultures and faiths were welcomed into the mosque on March 15 to pay their respects at one site of the shooting.
