{"id":8835,"date":"2020-02-24T08:00:45","date_gmt":"2020-02-24T13:00:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/thediplomaticenvoy\/?p=8835"},"modified":"2021-06-15T09:15:32","modified_gmt":"2021-06-15T13:15:32","slug":"american-citizens-quarantined-on-cruise-ship-to-be-chartered-back-to-the-u-s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/thediplomaticenvoy\/2020\/02\/24\/american-citizens-quarantined-on-cruise-ship-to-be-chartered-back-to-the-u-s\/","title":{"rendered":"American Citizens Quarantined on Cruise Ship to be Chartered back to the U.S."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Meg Gawron<br \/>\n<\/strong><strong><em>Staff Writer<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On February 20 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/how-a-princess-cruise-became-a-coronavirus-catastrophe\/\">Wired<\/a> reported that two weeks after the <em>Diamond Princess<\/em> cruise ship left from Yokohama, Japan, 542 passengers and crew members tested positive for COVID-19, commonly known as the Coronavirus.<\/p>\n<p>Immediately, the ship went on lock-down. The casino closed, all meals were boxed and sent to passengers\u2019 cabins, and all on board are to be quarantined for at least 14 days. The cruise ship was headed for China, Vietnam, and Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>While the <em>Diamond\u2019s<\/em> 2,666 passengers waited for their release, the U.S. government decided to evacuate the nearly 400 Americans on board, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2020\/02\/15\/806295825\/u-s-to-evacuate-americans-from-virus-struck-diamond-princess-cruise-ship\">NPR<\/a>. If a passenger tested positive for COVID-19, they were to remain in quarantine, and if not, they would be flown back to the United States.<\/p>\n<p>On February 14, two days before the State Department planned to charter a plane for the passengers, 14 passengers tested positive for COVID-19, <a href=\"https:\/\/arstechnica.com\/science\/2020\/02\/coronavirus-patients-flew-to-us-after-cdc-explicitly-recommended-against-it\/\">Arstechnica<\/a> reports. The CDC contended the infected passengers should remain in quarantine, but their argument was overruled by the State Department.<\/p>\n<p>On February 16, roughly 300 Americans left the <em>Diamond<\/em> to fly back to the U.S., with some passengers, one of which testing positive for COVID-19, choosing to remain on board. Upon landing, the 13 infected evacuees were immediately quarantined, and as of February 21 remain in quarantine in Omaha, Nebraska.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/02\/18\/diamond-princess-cruise-evacuee-livestreams-quarantine-in-hospital\/\">The New York Post<\/a> describes how the horror for those infected with COVID-19 is far from over. Jeri Seratti-Goldman showcased life in the quarantine center in a video posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/jeri.serattigoldman\/videos\/10220617087674232\/\">Facebook<\/a>. Seratti-Goldman explained how despite testing negative for the disease, she must remain in isolation while her husband Carl, who tested positive, receives care. \u201cI\u2019m not able to leave this room at all,\u201d Seratti-Goldman said, \u201cCarl and I Facetime so we can just pretend that we are together.\u201d \u00a0Seratti-Goldman&#8217;s quarantine will last for 14 days, but there is no telling when her husband will be better.<\/p>\n<p>Another cruise ship, Holland America\u2019s <em>MS Westerdam<\/em>, may not enter any port on its itinerary due to fear over COVID-19, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/travel\/cruises\/2020\/02\/09\/coronavirus-holland-america-cruise-ship-with-no-illness-turned-away\/4708677002\/\">USA Today<\/a> reports. Despite no one on the ship testing positive for the disease, passengers are being forced to remain on board.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freep.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2020\/02\/09\/coronavirus-westerdam-cruise-ship-michigan\/4707517002\/\">The Detroit Free Press<\/a> quotes Steve Muth, a passenger on the <em>MS Westerdam<\/em>, saying, \u201cI think we\u2019re headed toward Vietnam, maybe Malaysia, Cambodia\u2014they won\u2019t tell us just yet.\u201d Passengers remain in the dark about when they will even get home because of the rapidly disseminating fear over the \u2018coronavirus epidemic.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/feb\/16\/we-must-halt-the-spread-of-xenophobia-surrounding-coronavirus\">The Guardian<\/a> discusses how overarching fear regarding COVID-19, such as the kind causing ports to reject the <em>MS Westerdam<\/em>, contributes to worsening xenophobia toward China.
