The Seton Hall United Nations\u00a0Association\u00a0(SHUNA)\u00a0Model United Nations team reached the Top 25 for the North American\u00a0Fall 2019\u00a0College Model United Nations ranking for the first time in team history, reports\u00a0Best Delegate<\/a>.\u00a0The Seton Hall team\u00a0now ranks\u00a0number 12\u00a0out of more than a hundred competing teams.<\/p>\n

According to the rankings, Seton Hall finished second at the Specialized Crisis Simulation at Yale, behind only the University of Pennsylvania. Additionally, Seton Hall also recently won an award at the Boston Area United Nations Conference.<\/p>\n

The ranking explained that a change in the weighted score methodology\u00a0helped push Seton Hall\u2019s ranking up. With the change, the\u00a0weighting\u00a0gap between small and large conferences decreased, which benefited SHUNA.<\/p>\n

Despite not being in the top 25 in previous years, Seton Hall\u2019s Model UN team was nonetheless consistently among the upper part of the ranking. For example, as\u00a0Best Delegate<\/a>\u00a0notes, the team was in the top 75 for the 2017-2018 academic year.\u00a0 During the 2016-2017\u00a0year, Seton Hall\u00a0was<\/a>\u00a0in the top 50.<\/p>\n

Stephen Hoffman, the\u00a0President of the team,\u00a0noted that\u00a0it was a pleasant surprise that Seton Hall made it\u00a0to number 12. \u201cWhile our goal\u00a0was to be in the top 25,\u00a0we did not even\u00a0imagine being so close to the top 10,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Explaining the success of the team this year,\u00a0Hoffman\u00a0mentioned\u00a0that excellent work by the current freshman class\u00a0was a major factor for these positive results.\u00a0He also emphasized that the club worked on its student body retention rate and that the club now has fifteen active sophomore students\u00a0and a total of 40 active members.\u00a0Through SHUNA\u2019s mentorship program, students can develop the skills to succeed along with the SHUNA team.<\/p>\n

Elena Soisson, SHUNA\u2019s Treasurer,\u00a0also expressed her joy with the new ranking.\u00a0\u201cI am very proud of how much our team has\u00a0expanded,\u201d she said,\u00a0\u201cWe are now attending\u00a0more conferences per semester than in previous years.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the spring semester alone, SHUNA will participate in\u00a0five more\u00a0conferences. The first one will be\u00a0MUNE,\u00a0Model United Nations\u00a0at Emory University,\u00a0from February 6 to February 9, which will be the first conference that SHUNA will fly to.\u00a0Afterward, SHUNA plans to attend the following conferences: Princeton Diplomatic Invitational, the Five College Model United Nations Conference from Mount Holyoke University, Pennsylvania United Nations at Penn State University, and MUN at the College of William and Mary.<\/p>\n

Hoffman and Soisson expressed hope that this positive trend will continue and encouraged more students to join SHUNA. \u201cI have used SHUNA to market my public speaking and teamwork skills,\u201d Soisson noted, \u201cand so can any student who joins us, even if they are not a Diplomacy major.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
