After the Solomon Islands and Kiribati ceased diplomatic relations with Taiwan in September, only fifteen countries now formally recognize it as a country. In the past three years, Taiwan has lost seven diplomatic partners in total. These countries prefer to take Beijing\u2019s side in exchange for Chinese investments and economic assistance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While trying to isolate Taiwan diplomatically, China also seeks to strengthen its economic ties with the entity, reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/asia\/2019\/11\/07\/china-tries-to-deepen-economic-ties-with-taiwan-yet-more\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he Economist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Through economic integration exists, Beijing hopes to make independence an unattractive outcome for Taiwan \u2013 China even announced 26 measures seeking to deepen pre-existing economic ties, formally permitting Taiwanese citizens to turn to Chinese consulates for assistance abroad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, Taiwan may have other plans in mind. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2019\/11\/07\/taiwan-elections-2020-resilient-economy-amid-us-china-war-helps-tsai.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CNBC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Taiwanese leader Tsai Ing-wen hopes to decrease the island\u2019s economic dependence on China as she seeks to win her second term in upcoming elections. In order to counter Chinese influence, her government aims to attract more foreign investors and create incentives for Taiwanese firms operating abroad to return home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Nonetheless, Beijing seeks to interfere with the election and make Ms. Tsai leave office, reports the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfr.org\/in-brief\/how-china-interfering-taiwans-election\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Council on Foreign Relations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In order to do so, China uses several strategies, such as spreading fake news in social media, increasing censorship of Taiwanese media, and conducting millions of cyberattacks per month.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Through these attempts, Beijing hopes that the opposition Kuomintang Party (KMT) will win the election. While the KMT party agrees that China and Taiwan are the same nation, Ms. Tsai\u2019s governing Democratic Progressive Party has adopted the toughest China policy across all Taiwanese political parties.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Although Chinese interference worked in Taiwan\u2019s local elections in 2018, the Council on Foreign Relations predicts that Beijing\u2019s efforts could be ineffective this time because the protests in Hong Kong damaged Taiwanese perception of China.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Furthermore, Taiwan\u2019s foreign minister warned of possible military conflict with China if the Chinese economy continues to struggle, reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-taiwan-diplomacy-china\/taiwan-warns-of-possible-attack-if-chinas-slowdown-becomes-serious-idUSKBN1XH0H5\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. As Taiwan\u2019s elections draw closer, China is increasing its efforts to reunify with the \u201crebel province,\u201d including regularly flying bomber patrols in the area surrounding the island. In response, Taiwan\u2019s foreign minister stated that if internal stability becomes a major concern, then the government will need to take precautions and plan for military conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In fact, Taiwan even invited U.S. officials to make visits to help determine the island\u2019s defensive capabilities, reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/military\/article\/3035625\/taiwan-invites-us-help-gauge-its-military-strength-analysts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">he South China Morning Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The Taiwanese military allocated half a million dollars to pay for American military personnel\u2019s travel expenses. According to Miao Hui-feng, head of Taiwanese defense ministry\u2019s Integrated Assessment Department, U.S. delegates will make three visits for 15 days total in 2020. Through these visits, Taiwan hopes to become better prepared to face China\u2019s increasingly strong military.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Additionally, the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously approved a bill that seeks to protect Taiwan, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3035788\/us-bill-protect-taiwan-chinese-diplomatic-pressure-wins\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the South China Morning Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in a later report. This bill would allow the U.S. Department of State to downgrade diplomatic relations and reduce economic aid to states that help China isolate Taiwan.
