Jared Kushner, White House Senior Adviser and Donald Trump\u2019s son-in-law, used a private email account to conduct government business according to reports by\u00a0Politico<\/a>\u00a0on Sunday, September 24. Although there has been no evidence of classified materials exchanged, Kushner\u2019s attorney, Abbe Lowell, said that Kushner\u2019s private email and personal account were used \u201cto communicate with other government officials\u201d.<\/div>\n

NPR<\/a>\u00a0reported that Kushner set up the private email address \u201cto handle unofficial communications\u201d. Abbe Lowell said in a statement that \u201cfewer than a hundred emails\u201d were exchanged through Kushner\u2019s private email to White House colleagues on topics related to news coverage and political commentary. His attorney confirmed that the exchange of emails through Kushner\u2019s personal email \u201coften occurred when someone initiated the exchange by sending an email to his personal, rather than his White House address\u201d.<\/div>\n

BBC<\/a>\u00a0notes that the emails were exchanged between Kushner and fellow administration officials regarding \u201cmedia coverage, event planning and other subjects\u201d. Although the emails have been confirmed by\u00a0Politico<\/a>\u00a0to be relevant to government business,\u00a0BBC<\/a>\u00a0says \u201cthere is no indication that Mr. Kushner shared classified or privileged information through his private email account\u201d. Lowell stated that the content of the emails were \u201cusually forwarded news articles or political commentary\u201d.<\/div>\n

Politico<\/a>\u00a0reported that Kushner\u2019s personal email was established in December, raising concern whether the emails exchanged for government business were preserved. According to\u00a0USAToday<\/a>, the President Records Act dictates when\u00a0an executive branch employee uses a private email address for official business, they must copy their official government accounts in the exchange \u2013 or forward any messages from their private accounts to their official account within 20 days.<\/a>\u00a0Kushner\u2019s attorney stated that his \u201cnon-personal emails were forwarded to his official address\u201d. Although Lowell states that the emails have been forwarded, it has yet to be confirmed true.<\/div>\n

Jared Kushner isn\u2019t the first adviser in the Trump administration to utilize private email accounts. According to\u00a0The New York Times<\/a>, \u201cat least six of President Trump\u2019s closest advisers occasionally used private email addresses to discuss White House matters\u201d, Officials in the Trump administration including\u00a0former chief of staff Reince Priebus, former chief strategist Steve Bannon, and economic adviser Gary Cohn have utilized private email servers to conduct White House business.<\/a>\u00a0President Trump\u2019s daughter and adviser, Ivanka Trump, was also caught in the action of using a private email.\u00a0Newsweek<\/a>\u00a0reported that Ivanka used her email \u201cto communicate with a government official after her father took office\u201d.Documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act<\/a>\u00a0(FOIA), revealed that prior to becoming a federal employee, Ivanka was \u201cidentifying herself as Ivanka Kushner\u201d in a personal email when communicating with Linda McMahon, the administrator of the United States Small Business Administration.<\/div>\n

It is still unclear whether Kushner, Ivanka Trump, or the White House officials discussing government business over private emails will be the focus of a Congress-led investigation. Private emails continue to be an issue in politics and whether or not the Trump administration will fall into turmoil is dependent on whether the actions will be investigated.<\/div>\n
