In the slums of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, is a world enveloped by poverty, drug trafficking, and gangs.
\n<\/span>
\n<\/span>However, the clashes between rival gangs are not exclusive to these impoverished areas. Earlier this year, 56 people were killed in a prison in Manaus as a result of a violent jail riot in Brazil, according to <\/span>BBC News. <\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Among the inmates were various members of the most powerful gang in the country, the First Capital Command (P.C.C.). Many inmates are incarcerated due to an ongoing battle of supremacy over Brazil\u2019s Amazon rivers. These rivers contain numerous smuggling routes for cocaine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The gangs involved in the attack include the Family of the North, a gang operating out of the Amazon, and the Red Command, a drug trafficking organization from Rio, according to <\/span>The New York Times<\/span><\/a>. After the massacre, the P.C.C. proceeded to kill 33 people at a penitentiary in Roraima. <\/span><\/p>\n

The challenging economic and political situation in Brazil is seen as the main reason for the escalation in violence. This is especially true in Rio, where police budget cuts are coupled with angst and desperation among young Brazilians who live in slums. Funding for events, such as the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games, both hosted in Brazil, have contributed to the reduction of government expenditure on various national issues. <\/span><\/p>\n

Ignacio Cano, a social researcher at the Violence Studies Lab of Rio de Janeiro State University, told the <\/span>Daily Mail<\/span><\/a> that \u201c2016 has been a very bad year. We have seen a dramatic increase in homicides, robberies and other crimes\u201d. Cano\u2019s comments are in response to the police\u2019s mishandling and misunderstanding of gang life in Rio. \u201cWe lost a big opportunity to transform police and develop a new public safety model,\u201d said Cano.<\/span><\/p>\n

The bloodshed in and out of the overcrowded prisons in Brazil are a result of a corrupt system of mismanagement. Brazil\u2019s current president Michel Temer expressed his solidarity to the victims of the killings in the Amazon prisons by phrasing the atrocity as a \u201cdreadful accident,\u201d according to the <\/span>Associated Press<\/span><\/a>. <\/span>“The prison was outsourced and privatized and therefore there was not an objective, clear and defined responsibility of the public agents,” said Temer in response to debates over the management of prisons and escalating government criticism. <\/span><\/p>\n

N\u00f3s temos visto um aumento significativo nos homic\u00eddios, roubos, e outros crimes\u201d. A pol\u00edcia n\u00e3o t\u00eam dado a devida aten\u00e7\u00e3o para as fac\u00e7\u00f5es no pa\u00eds. \u201cN\u00f3s perdemos uma grande oportunidade de transformar a pol\u00edcia e desenvolver um novo modelo de seguran\u00e7a p\u00fablica\u201d, disse Cano. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n
