Its closure has resulted in shortages, which is especially critical during the spring planting season, according to PBS.

The production of fertilizers requires a significant amount of energy, hence natural gas making up 70 percent of total production costs. This is why the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz, where a third of global fertilizer trade flows, became so important. Countries involved in the conflict account for nearly 49 percent of global urea exports and about 30 percent of global ammonia exports, with urea being the most widely used solid nitrogen fertilizer in the world as reported by USA Today. The price of urea has risen from $80 per ton to $470 amidst the war. As a result of the shortages, farmers all over the world are shifting to the cultivation of plants requiring fewer nutrients. For example, American farmers will plant fewer areas with corn, while the Australian ones prefer barley to nitrogen-dependent wheat and canola, reports Reuters.

In the United States, 80 percent of farmers stocked their fertilizers last fall. Despite this, farmers state they fear cost increases will still endanger them greatly. Russel Boening, a Texas farmer, stated that nitrogen prices are currently 40 percent higher than three months ago. He added, “there’s people saying, well, 80 percent of the fertilizer has already been purchased for this year’s crop. And we actually heard that figure from USDA. Even if 80 percent is pre-purchased and the other 20 percent goes up 50 percent or more, it can still be a pretty good hit for you,” according to an interview with PBS. Similarly, Matt Frostic told PBS that Nitrogen cost $350 a ton in January 2026 and now costs $600.

According to the American Farm Bureau Federation, at least 70 percent of farmers find themselves unable to purchase enough fertilizers due to high prices. Additionally, 75 percent of farmers state that fertilizer prices have become too high. About 60 percent report deteriorating financial conditions in general, per USA Today.

As mentioned by Carl Skau, an official at the World Food Program, the shortage comes “just as planting season begins,” in developing countries in the Northern Hemisphere and “in the worst case, this means lower yields and crop failures next season” according to the Associated Press.

As detailed by the Associated Press, in Ethiopia, which gets over 90 percent of its nitrogen fertilizer from Europe, the planting season is now. Similarly, in Germany, farmer Dirk Peters said, “our crops out in the field need nitrogen now — the sooner the better.” The effect on consumer costs is bound to increase because, as per the Associated Press, decreased yields due to lower usage of fertilizers will inevitably lead to increased food prices.

The global prices of food increased by 2.4 percent in March, marking two consecutive months of growth, fueled by rising energy and fertilizers cost due to the Iran war, according to a report released by the United Nations. If the war continues, it is expected that the average fertilizer price could be 15-20 percent higher in the first half of 2026. The UN food program stated that increasing food prices would push millions “towards severe food insecurity,” as verified by Forbes.

In the UK food prices are expected to grow by at least 9 percent by the end of this year. Center of Global development stated “When fertilizer becomes more expensive, the next harvest gets smaller and costlier. We won’t see the full effects until the harvest season 6-12 months later,” as stated by Forbes.

Most vulnerable nations that rely highly on Persian Gulf fertilizers are in Africa and South Asia. Rising costs may mean less fertilization and low crop production if the war continues for a long time. Although there were no significant declines in world crop production following the 2022 Ukraine-Russia conflict, IFPRI says that rising nitrogen fertilizer prices will eventually lead to high dependence on nitrogen fertilizers such as rice.

Elanathan Kassa Staff Writer The war in Iran is expected to have devastating effects on food prices, due to

[2982,2734,2727,1354
396,2151
post-13994","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-april-2026","category-business","category-business-and-culture","category-world","tag-iran","tag-farming

How the Iran War is Driving up Fertilizer Costs and Food prices Worldwide - The Diplomatic Envoy

<meta name="description" content="The war in Iran is expected to have devastating effects on food prices, due to a third of the world's fertilizer supply passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
