Founded in 1952, the American Council on Germany is an independent, nonpartisan, and nonprofit organization that works to strengthen German-American relations and provide a deeper understanding of Germany, Europe, and the importance of the transatlantic partnership.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the American Council on Germany, one of the biggest projects I was able to help with was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acgusa.org\/support-the-acg\/participate-in-the-mccloy-dinner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">2025 John J. McCloy Awards Dinner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, held on November 14, 2025. The McCloy Awards Dinner pays tribute to American and German leaders who have played instrumental roles in the mutually beneficial relationship between the two nations, while also celebrating the thriving partnership between Germany and the United States. The dinner is named in honor of John J. McCloy, the founding Chairman of the American Council on Germany and the first civilian U.S. High Commissioner for Germany after World War II.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The 2025 dinner welcomed more than 300 leaders from the German-American business community to recognize the achievements of Nikesh Arora, Chairman and CEO of Palo Alto Networks; Tim H\u00f6ttges, Chief Executive Officer of Deutsche Telekom AG; and Ambassador Kristen Silverberg, President and COO of Business Roundtable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many other distinguished guests had the opportunity to speak at the dinner. German Ambassador to the United States, Ambassador Jens Hanefeld, delivered remarks and shared a letter of greeting from Chancellor Friedrich Merz.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Awards were presented by Dr. Alex Karp, CEO of Palantir Technologies, to Mr. H\u00f6ttges and Ravi Kumar, CEO of Cognizant, to Mr. Arora. Ambassador Robert M. Kimmitt, Chairman Emeritus of the American Council on Germany and Senior International Counsel at WilmerHale LLP, presented the Transatlantic Leadership Award to Ambassador Silverberg, and read a letter from President Donald J. Trump.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ACG Vice Chair Frances Devlin, Head of Strategy, Global Policy &amp; Public Affairs at Pfizer Inc, and ACG President and CEO Dr. Steven E. Sokol emceed the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another part of my internship involved welcoming esteemed guests to our New York City office for discussions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of these guests was Christian Schmidt, High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Deputy Chairman of the Hanns Seidel Foundation. As a former German Federal Minister, High Representative Schmidt discussed the latest developments in the Balkans, placing the region into historical context and discussing wider transatlantic security issues, past, present, and future. This meeting was around the 30th anniversary of the Dayton Peace Accords, so he called on a future generation of leadership to build on this legacy of forging cooperation. The ACG allowed me the honor of inviting four other Seton Hall School of Diplomacy and International Relations students to this discussion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I was also able to attend and draft an executive summary for a fireside chat with Dr. Constanze Stelzunm\u00fcller, Director and Senior Fellow of Foreign Policy at the Center on the United States and Europe and Fritz Stern Chair on Germany and Transatlantic Relations at the Brookings Institution. Dr. Stelzunm\u00fcller discussed the new National Security Strategy, which was published just days prior, from a German and trans-Atlantic perspective.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This internship allowed me to get a closer look at German-American relations as a Diplomacy and International Relations major with a minor in German. In the summer of 2026, I have the opportunity to study abroad in L\u00fcneburg, Germany, to further my studies in the German language.
