Pope Francis, born <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was the first Latin American pontiff who alienated conservatives with his critiques of capitalism and climate change, reports the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vatican-pope-francis-dead-01ca7d73c3c48d25fd1504ba076e2e2a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cardinal Kevin Farrell said from the chapel of the Dous Santa Marta, where Francis resided, \u201cAt 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the home of the Father. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and of his Church.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Francis suffered from a chronic lung disease, having part of one lung removed in his younger years. In February 2025, he was hospitalized for 38 days after suffering a respiratory crisis that developed into double pneumonia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pope Francis\u2019 medical team and doctor concluded there was no point in rushing him to the hospital following his stroke, given the severity of his condition and his standing orders to avoid extreme medical treatment. Sergio Alfieri, a surgeon who coordinated Francis\u2019 treatment during his five-week hospitalization and who responded to his emergency on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Monday, said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/2025\/04\/24\/pope-francis-death-final-moments-doctor\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Washington Post<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">article, \u201cHe died without suffering, at home.\u201d Further stating that hospitalizing him would have been \u201cuseless\u201d because he probably would\u2019ve died en route, and he \u201cknew the Pope wanted to die at home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/263505\/live-updates-death-of-pope-francis-and-sede-vacante\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Holy See Press Office<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">announced that from 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 23, to 7 p.m., more than 90,000 people passed through the basilica to pay their respects to Pope Francis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He made his last public appearance on Easter Sunday, a day before his death, to bless thousands of people in St. Peter\u2019s Square. He used the final days of his papacy to emphasize his main themes, particularly the need to defend migrants and others on the margins of society, writes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/21\/world\/europe\/pope-francis-mourning.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alfieri told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.repubblica.it\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">La Repubblica<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that Pope Francis had one final regret. That when he visited with prisoners on Holy Thursday, a papal tradition in emulation of the humility of Jesus, he was not strong enough to wash their feet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In his final will, Francis confirmed he would be buried in St. Mary Major Basilica in a simple underground tomb with only \u201cFranciscus\u201d written on it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pope Francis was elected on a mandate to reform the Vatican bureaucracy and finances, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">but shook the church further without changing its core doctrine. He told the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pope-francis-gay-rights-ap-interview-1359756ae22f27f87c1d4d6b9c8ce212\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated <\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pope-francis-gay-rights-ap-interview-1359756ae22f27f87c1d4d6b9c8ce212\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Press<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in 2023, \u201cBeing homosexual is not a crime,\u201d urging an end to civil laws that criminalize it. The Pope also changed the church\u2019s position on the death penalty, calling it inadmissible in all circumstances.
