At this meeting, the foreign ministers of each country discussed trilateral cooperation on disasters, aging, the green economy, and declining birth rates writes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/japan-china-south-korea-foreign-ministers-313665d1a611abeb42180245d7e167f1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The backdrop of this meeting comes as President Trump has shaken the diplomatic world across the board. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-03-22\/trump-s-makeover-of-us-diplomacy-leaves-many-allies-at-a-loss?embedded-checkout=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that many U.S. allies are \u201cat a loss\u201d regarding what to do with the current United States foreign policy shift. The shift towards tariff wars on longtime allies, skepticism towards established international institutions, and less commitment towards previous U.S. treaties and obligations, has upended the previous perception of cooperation and faith in the U.S. John Major, former prime minister of the United Kingdom, reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/feb\/16\/john-major-trump-us-isolationism-threatens-global-democracy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, told BBC News that there is a likely potential for China to replace the spot the U.S. previously held on the world stage. He warns that the U.S. might regret \u201cceding global leadership.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This meeting by China, Japan, and South Korea highlights this movement by China to replace the U.S. even amongst traditional U.S. allies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/3\/22\/japan-south-korea-and-chinas-fm-pledge-mutual-understanding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Al Jazeera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> writes that this trilateral meeting on strengthening ties is important for two reasons. Firstly, it comes amid President Trump\u2019s shaking of traditional allies. Secondly, and arguably more impressively, it is an accomplishment for the three nations to grow closer and overcome their contentious history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Japan has territorial and historical disputes with both China and South Korea, dating back to before and after the second world war. South Korea has disputes with China over the militarization and nuclearization of North Korea. Yet, despite these differences and disputes, the three nations came together with talks of increased cooperation and \u201cbuild[ing] confidence between these three countries,\u201d according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/3\/22\/japan-south-korea-and-chinas-fm-pledge-mutual-understanding\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Al Jazeera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2019s Fadi Salameh.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even more important was the discussion the three nations had regarding North Korea. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/english.kyodonews.net\/news\/2025\/03\/9b20ba5142f5-update2-japan-china-s-korea-agree-to-promote-future-oriented-cooperation.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kyodo News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that Wang Yi, representing China, expressed hope for a solution on the Korean Peninsula to achieve long-term peace in Asia. Cho Tae Yul, representing South Korea, told reporters that the three nations should focus work on the denuclearization of North Korea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20250321-japan-china-south-korea-foreign-ministers-meet-in-tokyo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">France 24<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> elaborates upon other issues discussed, which includes cooperation on science and technology. In addition to this, the most noteworthy shake-up was the discussion surrounding trade. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deccanherald.com\/world\/japan-china-south-korea-meet-at-geopolitical-turning-point-in-history-3457858\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Deccan Herald<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> writes about discussions surrounding potentially removing the Chinese ban on imported Japanese seafood, while the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy\/article\/3303454\/china-pushes-japan-south-korea-stronger-trade-ties-counter-chaos-world-order\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">South China Morning Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> published that China pushed for free trade and stronger economic integration between the three.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The focus on trilateralism between the three nations, despite their contentious past, has the potential to shift economic power and diplomatic influence towards the region. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2025\/03\/22\/japan\/politics\/tokyo-trilateral-meeting\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Japan Times <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">quotes Iwaya as saying he, China, and Korea \u201chad a frank exchange of views on trilateral cooperation and regional international affairs &#8230; and confirmed that we will promote future-orientated cooperation.
