C\u0103lin Georgescu, the 62-year-old leader of the Romanian Far-Right populist movement, was notified by the Central Election Bureau (BEC)<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that his presidential bid was denied<\/span><b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The former agronomist turned politician shocked everyone in November when he won the first round of presidential elections as an Independent. The rise of the Tik-Tok sensation politician was expedient, but has had its challenges reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/romania-election-president-europe-georgescu-90bebd251cb1376ee654c58d90afa956\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. C\u0103lin Georgescu has created a political personality around his pro-Russian and anti-NATO views. He often praises Putin for being \u201ca man who loves his country\u201d according to the local Romanian news source <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.libertatea.ro\/stiri\/cine-este-pro-rus-calin-georgescu-castigator-tur-1-alegeri-prezidentiale-rusia-stat-inventat-5096819\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Libertatea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Georgescu frames himself as a politician who stands up for the traditional Romanian values. He often describes former fascist and anti-Semitic Romanian government officials as national heroes says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/romanian-court-upholds-ban-georgescu-election-665687a1a7fb9bebe3c87b5e2b90fc5b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Yet, outside his far-right populist rhetoric, the critical issue that arises has been much more bureaucratic. After his historic win in December, the court declared the results invalid, citing Russian meddling, and false statements referring to campaign financing. Georgescu\u2019s personal and political work has been watched heavily for the last six months under judicial investigation according to another article from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/romania-georgescu-election-d0541a5bc20ddf7be0689d1813f9495c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0The far-right Populist leader\u2019s biggest blow was the denial of the opportunity to run in the presidential election. The BEC took into consideration the scandal of the November elections and in a statement to Romanian news agency <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/actmedia.eu\/daily\/central-electoral-bureau-takes-into-account-fundamental-aspects-already-ruled-by-ccr-in-candidacy-rejection\/112921\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ActMedia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> stated that \u201cthe Constitutional Court implicitly and universally ruled on the failure to meet the legal conditions for the registration of the candidacy submitted by C\u0103lin Georgescu.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">C\u0103lin Georgescu\u2019s denial of a presidential bid was immediately appealed by his campaign. In a message to his supporters he has called the denial\u00a0 \u201ca direct blow to the heart of democracy worldwide,\u201d reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/10\/romania-pro-russia-presidential-candidate-calin-georgescu-to-fight-election-ban\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. On March 11, the appeal was denied, and Georgescu\u2019s presidential campaign had ended. Georgescu\u2019s reaction to this denial has been framed as a lamentation for Romanian democracy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Romania has a historical precedent for denying far-right politicians and ultranationalists from running for president, and Georgescu\u2019s denial was not the only recent denial. Ultranationalist Diana \u0218o\u0219oac\u0103 was also denied just last year reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/romania-far-right-leader-george-simion-cleared-presidential-election\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Politico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. According to The Associated Press, Georgescu stated \u201cDemocracy and freedom are taking their last breath, and that is why, more than ever, we must show, democratically and peacefully, that our choice matters until the very end.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Georgescu\u2019s lamentation is now turned into political motivations of Romania\u2019s far-right to \u201crestore democracy and the rule of law.\u201d A power vacuum has now opened up in response to the denial of Georgescu\u2019s presidential bid as the 35 percent of Romanian Parliament held by the far-right no longer has a candidate says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/romanian-far-right-candidate-challenge-presidential-bid-rejection-top-court-2025-03-10\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The fact that the Romanian Government has ruled that they need to completely redo the election process due to this invalidation has put many other candidates in a rush to gain supporters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On March 15, the presidential bid of far-right politician and leader of the Alliance of the Union of Romanians (AUR) George Simion was accepted. Although coming in fourth in the annulled elections of November of 2024, Simion is expected to gain support after Georgescu\u2019s denial of a Presidential bid according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/romania-far-right-leader-george-simion-cleared-presidential-election\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Politico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Internationally the denial of Georgescu\u2019s presidential bid has caused many right wing and conservative politicians to call out what they see as the denial of freedom and democracy. Elon Musk\u2019s response to Georgescu\u2019s denial on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1898794109839569099\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">X<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, formerly know as Twitter, states \u201cthis is crazy\u201d, while American Vice President\u00a0 JD Vance shared that Romania no longer shares the American values of freedom and democracy, reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/mar\/10\/romania-pro-russia-presidential-candidate-calin-georgescu-to-fight-election-ban\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Far-right leaders spanning Europe have stated that the Romanian government is corrupt, and that democracy has failed. Whether it is a failure of democracy or the preservation of the rule of law, the denial of the presidential bid has led to an increase of questioning from the international view. What cannot be denied is that the elections May will be intense as the Romanian democracy itself is at question. As for C\u0103lin Georgescu, his political career is far from over. The denial of the presidential bid is only for this year\u2019s elections.
