China had Jack Ma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ma amassed his fortune as the creator of Alibaba, one of the world\u2019s largest e-commerce platforms, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rainerzitelmann\/2019\/11\/04\/the-jack-ma-story-why-thinking-big-is-more-important-than-technical-knowledge\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Forbes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. He currently sits as the eighth richest person in China, despite losing half his wealth since 2020, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccn.com\/news\/business\/jack-ma-net-worth-explained-billionaire-alibaba-co-founder\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CCN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. His influence is undeniable, with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/english.ckgsb.edu.cn\/story\/jack-ma-leader-of-the-e-commerce-revolution-in-china\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> calling him one of \u201cChina\u2019s most influential entrepreneurs in history.\u201d He still, to this day, holds considerable weight in the world of Chinese entrepreneurs, despite his fall from grace with China\u2019s communist party.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Four years ago, Ma gave a speech critical of Chinese regulations on private business, which according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/12\/business\/china-jack-ma-wealth-drop-intl-hnk\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CNN Business<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, came just before the Chinese government, led by President Xi Jinping, had their largest crackdown on private industry in years. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2020-12-22\/jack-ma-s-empire-in-crisis-after-china-halts-ant-group-ipo?embedded-checkout=true\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that after this speech, which famously said that Chinese regulation would suffocate innovation in China, China cancelled Ma\u2019s initial public offering for Ant Group Co. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/business\/companies\/china-s-rock-star-entrepreneur-took-on-beijing-it-led-to-a-1-3-trillion-meltdown-20230710-p5dmyg.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Sydney Morning Herald<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> writes that Chinese officials\u00a0 fined Ant $1.5 Billion. After all the damage and fighting, Ant\u2019s evaluation, previously set to be $315 billion, dropped to $78.5 billion. Alibaba didn\u2019t fare any better, with Chinese regulations and crackdowns resulting in Alibaba losing $620 billion from 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s safe to say the relationship between Xi and Ma was tense. Following this crackdown, Ma was reported to be laying low in Japan, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/alibaba-jack-ma-tokyo-japan-china-beijing-tech-crackdown-2022-11\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Business Insider<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. For the previously outspoken billionaire, who would perform in concerts for his employees, staying quiet and laying low was new for Ma.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Today, however, times are changing .Xi hosted top business leaders at a forum February 17, where he personally gave a speech, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archives.internationalintrigue.io\/p\/tuesday-8153\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">International Intrigue<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Sitting in the front row, and clapping enthusiastically for Xi, was Jack Ma. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c5yvyl710jpo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BBC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> writes that not only was Ma front and center, but his handshake with Xi signals that Ma is back. With Xi and Ma appearing to be in good graces with each other, Financial and Tech experts are all asking the same question. What does this mean for China\u2019s relationship with the private sector?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/economictimes.indiatimes.com\/news\/international\/us\/jack-ma-re-emerges-from-oblivion-alibaba-founder-joins-xi-jinping-in-high-stakes-tech-summit-is-he-back-in-chinese-presidents-good-books\/articleshow\/118361510.cms?from=mdr\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Financial Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that China has been battling a real-estate crisis, low consumption, and high youth unemployment. With policies designed to boost growth having a limited effect, Xi presented the problem as \u201csurmountable rather than unsolvable.\u201d Surrounding the focus on these issues by Beijing is Xi bringing Ma back.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/asia\/east-asia\/look-whos-back-alibabas-jack-ma-shakes-xis-hand-at-meeting-of-chinas-business-titans\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Straits Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> lists several developments in China\u2019s private sector that have Xi and others eying more investment. With DeepSeek catapulting Chinese AI ahead of American development, BYD surpassing Tesla to be the world&#8217;s top electric car manufacturer, and with Huawei announcing a tri-fold smartphone, the Chinese private industry has become an invaluable tool for Xi amidst the US-Chinese development cold war. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Straits Times also states <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that on February 17, Xi reiterated a promise he made in 2018,\u00a0 calling for the private sector to serve their country and continue to innovate development in key areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amid growing rivalries with the U.S. in technology, \ufffc<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ConsumerWealth Magazine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> states that this meeting with key business leaders, as well as the decision to bring Jack Ma back, shows that China is ready to win. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citigroup.com\/global\/insights\/bearing-fruits-from-made-in-china-in-2025\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Citigroup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> writes that \u201cMade in China in 2025\u201d introduced in 2015, was the huge push to rally Chinese markets and make China the main country to trade with. Surrounding these technological advancements, and with Xi making his commitment to the private sector clear, Xi isn\u2019t taking his foot off the gas<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Back on February 6, a Senate hearing\u00a0 titled \u201cMade in China 2025-Who is Winning?\u201d concluded that \u201cBeijing has the momentum and control of the battlefield as well as the players on it. The Chinese Communist Party is on a path toward a clean sweep,\u201d according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdd.org\/analysis\/2025\/02\/06\/made-in-china-2025-who-is-winning\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Foundation for Defense of Democracies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
