On Monday, October 28, <\/span>The Diplomatic Envoy<\/span><\/i> welcomed Henry Shuldiner, an investigative journalist at InSight Crime, for an engaging speaker event. Shuldiner, who has reported extensively on organized crime, corruption, and human rights, shared his experiences covering complex security issues in Colombia and the broader Latin America and Caribbean region. He discussed the unique insights he gained on organized crime and human security across South America and the challenges he faces as a journalist navigating dangerous regions and sensitive topics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Originally from the United States, Shuldiner has been based in Medell\u00edn, Colombia, for over two years, working with InSight Crime, a think tank and independent investigative journalism organization focused on deepening the debate around organized crime and citizen security in the Americas. Since joining InSight Crime in 2022, Shuldiner has produced daily news briefs and in-depth investigative reports that inform policymakers on issues such as corruption and organized crime dynamics across Latin America, with a particular emphasis on Colombia, Ecuador, Haiti, and Chile.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

InSight Crime combines investigative journalism with academic rigor, offering regular reporting, analysis, data, and policy recommendations. Its work is grounded in extensive field research, engaging actors from both legal and illegal spheres. Beyond its publications, InSight Crime collaborates with regional experts to provide tailored risk analysis, diagnostics, and strategies for effective intervention in complex security challenges.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Henry Shuldiner holds a degree in literature from Hamilton College and a master\u2019s degree in international relations from Syracuse University\u2019s Maxwell School. His commitment to understanding Latin America was furthered by a U.S. Fulbright fellowship, which he was awarded to teach English in Colombia. However, his fellowship was cut short by the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shuldiner began his career with study-abroad experiences during his time at Hamilton College. After completing his graduate studies at Syracuse, he gained valuable experience as a Graduate Research Assistant in the Latin America Program at The Wilson Center and the Americas Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). He also worked as a Program Associate at Freedom House before joining InSight Crime.<\/span><\/p>\n

Shuldiner\u2019s investigative work in Colombia currently centers on President Gustavo Petro\u2019s \u201cTotal Peace\u201d initiative, a key policy aimed at peace negotiations with armed groups like the National Liberation Army (ELN), Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia\u00a0(AGC), and the FARC dissidents. His reporting takes him to conflict zones where he interacts with local leaders, security personnel, and even members of guerrilla groups to document the realities of peacebuilding efforts. Shuldiner emphasized the critical role of preparation and security protocols for each field assignment. His team conducts extensive risk assessments and partners with local fixers who help manage logistics and ensure safe navigation through high-risk areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Discussing his area of expertise, Shuldiner spoke about how criminal networks in Colombia continue to profit from illegal mining, drug trafficking, and territorial control, often relying on local populations to cultivate coca crops and mine gold. His research also covers organized crime\u2019s impact on migration routes, such as the perilous Darien Gap, where criminal groups exert control over human trafficking routes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When asked about building trust with sources and fixers, Shuldiner highlighted the importance of patience and intuition, noting that learning to identify reliable contacts and building a network of trusted professionals is essential for successful field work. He stressed that journalism thrives on trustworthiness and integrity, underscoring how valuable it is for aspiring journalists to cultivate these relationships early in their careers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
