The republic formally submitted its application months ago, reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-09-02\/turkey-submits-bid-to-join-brics-as-erdogan-pushes-for-new-alliances-beyond-west\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bloomberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. T\u00fcrkiye is the first North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) member to attempt to join the BRICS block of nations. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This bid to join BRICS will have severe foreign policy implications, especially regarding its participation in Western-led international organizations like NATO and its delayed membership with the European Union (EU) since 2005. Also, this has called into question Ankara\u2019s ability to be an effective member in a Western-dominated world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/infobrics.org\/page\/history-of-brics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BRICS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is an economic group founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa aiming to \u201c[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">serve] common interests of emerging market economies and developing countries, but also to building a harmonious world of lasting peace and common prosperity.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201d One of the strategies of this agreement is \u2018de-dollarization\u2019 which is the concept of reducing \u201cglobal reliance on the dollar\u201d according to<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/currencies\/us-dollars-dominance-secure-brics-see-no-progress-de-dollarization-report-2024-06-25\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another goal is to reform international institutions like the International Monetary Fund and the United Nations to include more fair participation from non-Western states. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/world\/europe\/article\/3277083\/erdogans-turkey-requests-brics-membership-alongside-china-russia-and-india?module=perpetual_scroll_0&amp;pgtype=article\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">South China Morning Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that T\u00fcrkiye has been a participant in past BRICS summits, but only recently made formal statements regarding aspirational participation with the \u201cemerging market nations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s continuously delayed negotiations to join the EU have led it to seek other opportunities to establish global influence. Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan has stated that \u201cTurkey can become a strong, prosperous, prestigious and effective country if it improves its relations with the East and the West simultaneously,\u201d as reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/world-news\/2024\/09\/04\/turkey-nato-russia-g7-brics-rival-china-us\/?ICID=continue_without_subscribing_reg_first\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Telegraph<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/turkey-brics-developing-economies-erdogan-foreign-policy-15a2428e73e804732085f78b9c5c3c50\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erdo\u011fan defended his bid to join BRICS while being a NATO member by stating that T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s participation would be a \u201cwin-win\u201d situation. However, this move has received a lot of criticism from Western nations and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/turkey-nato-scrutiny-erdogan-1949120\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Newsweek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that the bid to join BRICS \u201cis more than just a hedge against NATO.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erdo\u011fan\u2019s foreign policy is one of the reasons that T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s EU negotiations have been delayed. Ankara\u2019s criticism of the West\u2019s allyship in the Russo-Ukrainian War and the Israel-Hamas War has delayed their membership to join the EU. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/exclusive-why-turkeys-erdogan-breaking-biden-ukraine-gaza-1923595\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Newsweek<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that \u201cErdogan argued that Western powers were taking wrong and potentially dangerous approaches to the two conflicts, both of which he warned had the potential to spiral.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> This move has strained T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s relationship with Western nations like the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/world\/turkey-applies-to-join-china-and-russia-in-brics-economic-bloc-kremlin-says\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">PBS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> News<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Putin has vowed that T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s application to join BRICS would receive,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201csupport [in] this aspiration and desire to be together with the countries of this alliance\u2026 to solve common problems.\u201d The relationship between Putin and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erdo\u011fan has called into question T\u00fcrkiye\u2019s ability to be a reliable ally for the West. Erdo\u011fan did not impose the same sanctions on Russian assets as the other Western nations did amidst the beginning of the Russo-Ukrainian War.
