He is popular among older generations transitioning T\u00fcrkiye from a secular state to a nation that favors Islam. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/turkey-election-erdogan-0a7eeb21718ca723f8eae2fe23d08e7d#:~:text=Erdogan's%20popularity%20at%20a%20moment,interviews%20with%20voters%20and%20analysts\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">AP News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that his endurance and continued power give voters a sense of stability because they do not want more change within the nation. However, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-13746679\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BBC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, many Turkish citizens are upset with his slow response to the 2023 Turkey-Syria earthquakes, the refugee crisis, and economic hardships.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In the last election, Erdo\u011fan lost substantial support in urban areas to the opposition because of the rising cost of living, incredibly high inflation, and his inability to address or reform the economy, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.i24news.tv\/en\/news\/middle-east\/levant-turkey\/artc-turkish-elections-opposition-win-key-cities-deals-blow-to-erdogan\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">i24News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/3\/31\/polls-open-in-turkey-local-elections-in-key-test-of-erdogans-popularity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aljazeera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Erdo\u011fan has lost the support of Gen-Z, as the young generation often trolls his livestreams and protests on social media. The frustration from Gen-Z stems from the \u201cpoor pandemic planning\u201d and the severe religiosity of Erdo\u011fan. Erdo\u011fan has significantly increased the number of vocational institutions that prepare young boys to become imams and preachers as the Turkish youth rejects religion, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2020\/07\/15\/turkey-youth-education-erdogan\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Foreign Policy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Erdo\u011fan\u2019s leadership continues to be criticized because of his incompetence in responding quickly to the 2023 Turkish Earthquakes which resulted in more than 50,000 deaths; recovery was slow and many communities continue to feel the effect of the natural disaster. This, combined with Syrian refugees in T\u00fcrkiye, has caused a lot of contention amongst the Turkish population. The Syrian population is fleeing their nation\u2019s ongoing civil war, with many Syrians living in \u201csafe zones\u201d that are controlled by Turkish authorities, as reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2024\/03\/28\/syrians-face-dire-conditions-turkish-occupied-safe-zone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Human Rights Watch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/may\/12\/syrians-turkey-elections-uncertain-future-whether-erdogan-stays-or-goes\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, about 80 percent of the Turkish population wants the Syrians in T\u00fcrkiye to be repatriated. As more refugees flee to T\u00fcrkiye xenophobia and resentment of Erdo\u011fan\u2019s policies grow exponentially.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This election is important for the future of T\u00fcrkiye due to the effects of Erdo\u011fan\u2019s administration, with his government evolving to be more Islamic and autocratic, reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/01\/world\/middleeast\/turkey-election-results.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. There is a stark difference between Erdo\u011fan at the beginning of his tenure and the present, between which he has cracked down on citizen rights since the 2016 coup d\u2019etat attempt. This unsuccessful coup resulted in the arrests of tens of thousands of people at the hands of the Turkish president for even minor connections to the group that carried out the coup, says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2023\/01\/19\/turkey-could-be-on-the-brink-of-dictatorship\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Economist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. He has superseded the checks and balances in government and has arrested opposition leaders, one of whom is his main opponent in this upcoming election.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The main opposition leader is Ekrem Imamo\u011flu, the recently re-elected mayor of Istanbul. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/imamoglu-turkish-mayor-following-erdogans-footsteps-2024-03-31\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that as a politician, Imamo\u011flu delivered services and development in Istanbul and implied that the same economic and social change can be applied to other cities in T\u00fcrkiye like Ankara and Adana. Imamo\u011flu is a member of the Republican People\u2019s Party (CHP), garnering vast support from Turkish people because of his ability to attract voters on both sides of the political aisle. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.chp.org.tr\/chp-tarihi\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CHP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> credits themselves as \u201cthe Party that gained independence to the nation, founded the Republic,&#8230; [and pioneered the] mission \u2026 of Turkey\u2019s democratization.\u201d According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thejakartapost.com\/opinion\/2024\/04\/04\/did-istanbul-elect-turkeys-new-leader.html#:~:text=as%20an%20alternative.-,What%20makes%20Imamoglu%20different%20from%20other%20opposition%20politicians%20is%20his,imam\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Jakarta Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Imamo\u011flu continues to garner support by being almost twenty years younger than Erdo\u011fan while having the ability to, \u201cappeal to both secularists and Islamic conservatives\u2026[as he] is a practicing Muslim.\u201d The duality of his ability to relate to different opposing sides has allowed a strong coalition of Turkish citizens to vote out Erdo\u011fan, surely bringing forth a new era of Turkish government.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Image courtesy of <em>Getty Images<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Local Turkish elections are unfolding and recent news shows that the future of the Justice and Development Party (AKP) and current President Tayyip Erdo\u011fan is uncertain.
