According to a March 31 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">joint statement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from both countries, \u201cThe respective governments have taken concrete steps to overcome any differences and strengthen this relationship,\u201d according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/argentina-colombia-mend-ties-following-milei-terrorist-comments-2024-04-01\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With nearly four months under his belt as President of Argentina, Javier Milei has made a name for himself as an agitator with his controversial policy and abrasive language. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jurist.org\/news\/2024\/03\/colombia-expels-argentine-diplomats-over-comments-from-president-javier-milei\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jurist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> shares that the dispute between the two countries was ignited by an interview with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CNN<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> where Milei stated that \u201cone can\u2019t expect much from someone who was a terrorist murderer\u201d about Colombian President Gustavo Petro, whom Milei also offhandedly called a \u201ccommunist\u201d during the same interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shortly after the interview on March 27, The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancilleria.gov.co\/newsroom\/publiques\/colombia-repudia-declaraciones-realizadas-presidente-republica-argentina-javier\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chancellery of Colombia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> responded to Milei\u2019s comments in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">press communication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The communication expressed that \u201cThe remarks of the Argentine president have deteriorated the trust of our nation,\u201d and that they have \u201coffended the dignity of President Petro.\u201d The communication also clarified that Petro was \u201celected in a democratic manner,\u201d dispelling Milei\u2019s allegation that he is a communist. The communication concluded with the expression of Colombia\u2019s intent to immediately expel an unspecified number of Argentine diplomats from the nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Since the communication from The Chancellery of Colombia, the two countries have allegedly began to work together to repair relations. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/colombian-president-gustavo-petro-javier-milei-diploamtic-crisis-f7fe7cfba8b9c12a17e206f356047a7c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> informs that Colombia has repealed its threat to remove Argentine Diplomats from Colombia, even going as far as to state that they will approve Argentina\u2019s newly appointed ambassador. Argentina has made steps to improve relations as well, announcing plans to send its foreign minister to Bogota.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Milei and Petro come from opposing political ideologies and have a history filled with tension since Milei was elected in November of this year. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/3\/28\/colombia-expels-argentinas-diplomats-after-milei-calls-petro-terrorist\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Al Jazeera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that shortly after Milei\u2019s election, Petro declared the victory as \u201ca sad moment for Latin America.\u201d Moreover, Petro compared Milei\u2019s derogatory remarks towards socialism to those of the Nazi leader Adolf Hitler. Al Jazeera also points out that In January, Colombia removed its ambassador from Argentina after Milei made similar comments, calling Petro a \u201cmurderous communist who is sinking Colombia.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/argentina-colombia-mend-ties-following-milei-terrorist-comments-2024-04-01\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, Milei\u2019s repeated accusations of Petro\u2019s communist ties have to do with the Colombian president&#8217;s past involvement in the long-demobilized 19<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of April (M-19) guerrilla movement. The M-19 was a military group founded by young Colombian activists in the 1970s that sought to build democracy and bridge the gap between the wealthy and the impoverished people of the nation. The M-19 is well known for its 1985 siege of the Palace of Justice in Bogota that resulted in over 100 deaths. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/06\/19\/world\/americas\/who-is-gustavo-petro.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that Petro joined the group when he was 17 and spent 10 years in the organization. At the time that the Palace of Justice was sieged, Petro was imprisoned due to his involvement with the M-19.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prominent voices across Latin America have criticized both Presidents Milei and Petro for their handling of the situation. The former president of Colombia, Ivan Duque, recently gave his opinion in an interview with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=eKaECRTsTVI\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CNN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: \u201cI believe that the relations between countries cannot be simply guided by the in-the-moment opinions of leaders. I believe it\u2019s necessary that this deescalates, and I believe that they must search for a solution through opportune diplomatic channels.
