Henry took power in 2021 without an election following the assassination of then-Prime Minister Jovenel Moise, but <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/03\/11\/americas\/haiti-pm-ariel-henry-resigns-gang-violence-intl-hnk\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CNN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that Haiti has not held elections since. Barbecue&#8217;s ascension to power comes after almost a month of a state of emergency following an attack on Haiti&#8217;s largest prison that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CNN<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> says allowed nearly 3,500 inmates to escape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ch\u00e9rizier, who heads a gang federation made up of former rival gangs, claimed responsibility for the attack and other attacks around the country, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-happening-in-haiti-what-to-know\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CBS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports. He claims that he wants a revolution in Haiti. In an interview with<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/3\/16\/overthrow-the-system-haiti-gang-leader-cherizier-seeks-revolution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Al Jazeera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> he declared, \u201cNow our fight will enter another phase \u2013 to overthrow the whole system, the system that is five percent of people who control 95 percent of the country&#8217;s wealth.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The humanitarian situation on the Caribbean island is dire and is the direct result of gang-fueled chaos, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/world\/americas\/article\/3255719\/unicef-head-compares-haitis-chaotic-situation-scenes-post-apocalyptic-film-mad-max\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">South China Morning Post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In a talk with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/catherine-russell-unicef-executive-director-face-the-nation-transcript-03-17-2024\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CBS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Catherine Russel, UNICEF\u2019s director, described the situation as \u201chorrific\u201d and a \u201cscene out of Mad Max.\u201d She said that getting aid to those suffering from severe hunger and malnutrition is currently impossible. Gangs now control swaths of Haiti&#8217;s capital, Port-Au-Prince, and roads leading out of the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Left unchecked with Ch\u00e9rizier&#8217;s rise to power, the rampage of the gangs has led to destruction, including power substations that led to extreme power outages, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/haiti-killed-gangs-laboule-thomassin-c1f4d1b367b15253cbd28ae9be886440\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Slums and other communities, as well as hospitals, are left without power as gangs loot and pillage at will.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The increase in gang violence also has led to the displacement of over 15,000 Haitians fleeing neighborhoods that have been raided by gangs, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/kenya-haiti-un-police-gang-violence-542869c4b67e02dbba97bd8f6235ae75\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Critical supplies are low, and as the main port in Port-au-Prince remains closed, the supplies cannot reach those in need.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Many U.S. Citizens remain in Haiti as gangs now control the airport in Port-au-Prince. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/state-department-helps-30-us-citizens-leave-haiti\/story?id=108222096\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ABC News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reported that the U.S. State Department returned more than 30 Americans on a chartered flight on Sunday, March 17. The State Department announced that U.S. Passport holders should register on an intake form. By Monday, almost 1,000 Americans had filled out the \u201ccrisis intake form,\u201d according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/nearly-1000-americans-haiti-plea-help-state-dept-says-gangs-unleash-new-attacks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fox News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Prime Minister Ariel Henry&#8217;s resignation came as he was on a diplomatic mission to Kenya seeking peace-keeping support to regain control of Haiti. Henry&#8217;s leadership has been locally under question, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/opinion\/msnbc-opinion\/haiti-prime-minister-gangs-barbeque-rcna143596\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">MSNBC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that in February, Haitians took to the streets to demand his resignation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Before Henry&#8217;s resignation, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2023\/sc15432.doc.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">UN Security Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> had <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">green-lit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> the deployment of foreign troops to reinforce the Haitian police and assist in confronting the Haitian gangs. However, The Associated Press reported that Kenya halted its plans for assistance following the dramatic flare-up of violence and Henry&#8217;s resignation. It intends to wait until the Transnational Council has formed to decide on a new president.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Politicians tapped for the council backed by Caricom, the Caribbean Community, and Common Market have backed out recently, making progress towards a new government nearly impossible, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/americas\/20240314-haiti-transitional-council-plan-crumble-political-parties-reject-tension?utm_source=ground.news&amp;utm_medium=referral\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">France24<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Jean Charles Mo\u00efse, an ex-senator and presidential candidate, and Guy Phillipe, a former rebel leader, held a news conference Wednesday to announce the rejection of the proposed council backed by the international community. Ch\u00e9rizier also announced in an interview with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Al Jazeera <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that he would reject any decisions made by a transnational council set up by CARICOM.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">With gang violence continuing to increase and the fight for control of Haiti intensifies, the poorest Haitian people are suffering the most.
