His death in prison is assured to have profound implications not only within the Russian government, but also on the global economic stage, as the United States imposed numerous sanctions on Russia in response. While the exact cause of Navalny&#8217;s death remains uncertain, U.S. President Joe Biden unequivocally asserted that, &#8220;Make no mistake: Putin is responsible for Navalny&#8217;s death,&#8221; according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2024\/02\/16\/world\/aleksei-navalny#:~:text=%E2%80%9CMake%20no%20mistake%3A%20Putin%20is,No%20one%20should%20be%20fooled.%E2%80%9D\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This abrupt critic of Putin is not an isolated incident; rather, it draws attention to the series of fatalities experienced by the Russian leader\u2019s previous adversaries, such as Russian Intelligence figure Alexander Litvinenko and Russian military leader Yevgeny Prigozhin, as documented by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/feb\/16\/the-mysterious-violent-and-unsolved-deaths-of-putins-foes-and-critics-alexi-navalny\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Navalny, celebrated as a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of Putin&#8217;s leadership and pervasive corruption in Russia, leaves behind a legacy that transcends borders. His death further escalates tensions between the democratic West and Russia, adding another layer of complexity to an already strained geopolitical landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAll it takes for evil to triumph is the inaction of good people. There\u2019s no need for inaction,\u201d Navalny remarked, as reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2024\/02\/16\/how-alexei-navalny-robbed-putin-of-his-powerhttps:\/www.economist.com\/leaders\/2024\/02\/16\/how-alexei-navalny-robbed-putin-of-his-power\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Economist<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. Navalny was born in 1976 to a Soviet army officer father and an economist mother. He studied law and began his focus in anti-corruption. Navalny also created RosPil, an anti-corruption project exposing various corrupt bodies, including state agencies, as reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/europe\/alexei-navalny-death-body-russian-opposition-putin-b2499676.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Independent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2013, Navalny ran for the position of Moscow&#8217;s mayor, narrowly missing victory. However, this setback marked just the beginning of his impactful political journey. Navalny persistently advanced his efforts against corruption, even falling victim to what\u00a0 his spokesperson deemed the first incident of poisoning orchestrated by the Russian government in 2020, as reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2024\/2\/16\/hold-alexei-navalny-timeline-from-poisoning-to-prison\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Al Jazeera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In August of 2020, while on a domestic flight over Siberia, Navalny fell ill and was hospitalized, leading to speculations of poisoning in his tea. Doctors in Russia told Navalny no poison was found in his system, but upon testing in Germany, the results indicated poison. Further, testing in France and Sweden confirmed Germany\u2019s finding, rousing distrust in the Russian government, gaining victories for Navalny\u2019s allies, as reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/idUSL8N2GB1L5\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now, four years later, Alexis Navalny was found dead in one of Russia\u2019s highest security prisons in the arctic circle, Penal Colony 3, where he was being held on extremism charges. The conditions in the prison are known to be, so much so that a 2021 report conducted by the U.S. Department of State says the conditions \u201cwere often harsh and life threatening. Overcrowding, abuse by guards and inmates, limited access to health care, food shortages and inadequate sanitation were common in prisons, penal colonies, and other detention facilities,\u201d as reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-crackdown-prison-opposition-putin-navalny-70485fee4b872c453334af37d1ea335a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/a><b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Navalny was outspoken about this treatment, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/petition\/russia-aleksei-navalny-putin-moscow\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Amnesty International<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. He was subject to a denial of medical treatment, sleep deprivation, and freezing temperatures. The U.S., wielding a formidable arsenal of sanctions, has swiftly acted to condemn Putin for the alleged wrongful death of Navalny, while concurrently reinforcing its commitment to supporting Ukraine in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, now entering its third year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;We must sustain unwavering support for Ukraine, even as we dismantle Russia&#8217;s war machine.
