His death was announced through a message to his mother by Russian authorities at a high-security Arctic penal colony where he had been serving a combined 30 \u00bd year sentence since 2021, according to a post <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Kira_Yarmysh\/status\/1758801430125695199\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on X<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by Navalny\u2019s spokesperson Kira Yarmish.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Federal Penitentiary Service of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District said in a statement that Navalny felt unwell after a walk at the IK-3 penal colony in Kharp, about 1,900 km (1,200 miles) northeast of Moscow, according to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/jailed-russian-opposition-leader-navalny-dead-prison-service-2024-02-16\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-navalny-dead-opposition-leader-2d11644f7ae5332587b39150f1fd1738\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reported that an ambulance arrived, but Navalny was not able to be revived.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Navalny\u2019s death comes less than a month before a Russian election that is likely to keep Vladimir Putin in power for at least six more years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">talk on Friday<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?533665-1\/president-biden-remarks-death-alexei-navalny\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CSPAN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, President Biden blamed Vladimir Putin for Navalny\u2019s death, calling it \u201cproof of Putin\u2019s brutality,\u201d and said that \u201cthere is no doubt that the death of Navalny was a consequence of something Putin and his thugs did.\u201d Biden joined many world leaders in placing the blame on Putin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Navalny rose to prominence in 2011, organizing mass protests that year and the following after it became clear Putin would win the election,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/show\/reported-death-of-russian-opposition-leader-alexei-navalny-sparks-global-outcry\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> PBS reports.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0 He went on to run against and come ahead of Putin\u2019s candidate in Moscow\u2019s Mayoral Election in 2013, putting him in the political spotlight. Despite multiple arrests, repeated threats, and concerns for his safety through the following years, Navalny pressed on in opposition to Putin\u2019s party.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Navalny continued organizing mass protests and led an anti-corruption campaign, the Anti-Corruption Foundation, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/acf.international\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ACF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, that harnessed the internet and social media to get his message across. His message led him to gain over 6 million subscribers on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/@NavalnyRu\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">YouTube<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2020, Navalny survived an FSB poison attack on a flight from Tomsk, Siberia, to Moscow. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/feb\/16\/chemical-burns-poisoning-prison-alexei-navalny-persecution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Guardian,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> after his plane made an emergency landing and he subsequently received treatment, he was taken to Germany, where scientists and doctors confirmed that he had been poisoned with Soviet-era Novichok. He slowly recovered in Europe and prepared to return to Russia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In January 2021, Navalny returned to Russia with his wife and was detained upon his arrival. Following his arrest, he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison, causing mass protests and the arrests of over 10,000 protestors in Russia, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-navalny-dead-opposition-leader-2d11644f7ae5332587b39150f1fd1738\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> He continued to be sentenced for more offenses in the months following, and at the time of his death, Navalny was set to serve more than three decades in prison.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Navalny in his video interviews, he faced oppression, stating that the kremlin wanted to \u201cbreak him\u201d for staying alive, according to The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Guardian. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He went on hunger strikes and complained of pains that many feared were the result of a \u201cslow-poison,\u201d which would have been used to kill him slowly over time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In December, Navalny went dark and his location became unknown. Many feared the worst until his allies located him a few weeks later at a penal colony above the Arctic Circle, which would be the last place he would live, reported The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Guardian.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Yarmysh said last month that he had spent more than 280 days in isolation, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-68315943\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0BBC News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Navalny leaves behind a legacy of activism and standing up to the face of corruption, even when threatened with arrest, harm, or death.
