This comparison may not be entirely inaccurate, as The Red Cross claims that the Russian Siege of Mariupol is veering towards a humanitarian crisis. Ukrainian reports estimate nearly 3,000 civilians have been killed. Indiscriminate bombings have rained down on civilian infrastructure as well including a maternity hospital and a children\u2019s hospital. As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/moscow-accused-forcibly-removing-civilians-russia-83663314\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ABC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> news reports, on March 29, 300 people, most of which likely being civilians, were killed in an airstrike on a theater in Mariupol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The negative impacts of the siege are not confined to civilian casualties, however. The whole city finds itself the victim of the resource depletion that comes with siege warfare. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-60601235\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BBC News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that much of Mariupol is trapped without reliable access to food, water, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">electrical <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">power. Russia\u2019s military has repeatedly utilized the siege plus humanitarian corridor tactic to break the will of urban resistance as they did in Syria, reports <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">NPR<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. In Mariupol, Russian forces have opened up humanitarian corridors, with the Mariupol City Council claiming that thousands of Ukrainians have been deported to Russia. These are all signs that the siege tactic will work to brutalize the city through multiple means until surrender is the only option for those who still defend Mariupol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Russian forces have not been spared from battlefield casualties in Mariupol either. More than 200 Russian soldiers have been killed in the course of the siege, and multiple high-ranking Russian officials have also been reported dead, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2022\/mar\/15\/oleg-mityaev-russian-general-killed-ukrainian-troo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Washington Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Statements from high-ranking officials at the Kremlin claim that the first stage of the special operation was a general success, reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/03\/25\/europe\/russian-general-calls-encirclement-of-ukrainian-cities-a-deliberate-plan\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">CNN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. The reality on the ground, however, shows heavy costs for all parties involved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Much of the democratic world has reacted to Vladimir Putin\u2019s abrupt invasion of Ukraine in remarkable lockstep. Statements of condemnations were backed up with punishing economic and diplomatic consequences. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10028215-voices-from-sports-world-offer-support-for-ukraine-after-russian-invasion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bleacher Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that displays of unity with Ukraine have permeated nearly every segment of society from pop culture to international sports. Protests have dotted major cities across the world, reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kjrh.com\/news\/national\/pro-ukraine-protests-sweep-across-europe\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">KJRH-TV<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/03\/24\/business\/russian-stock-exchange-moex.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that sanctions brought Russia\u2019s stock market and much of its economy to a screeching halt. Perhaps most important to Ukrainian self-determination, the public\u2019s strong support for Ukraine brought an almost immediate flow of vital weapons to Ukrainian resistance, reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2022\/03\/22\/ukraine-weapons-military-aid-00019104\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Politico<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some political pundits have labeled the general reaction to Russian aggression as reactionary ignorance. However, unlike other social phenomena that faded fast from public interest, Ukraine remains relevant in public discourse. More importantly for the defense of Ukraine, the attention of powerful geopolitical actors is also focused on the Eastern European country, reports <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2022\/3\/25\/us-eu-launch-team-to-reduce-european-reliance-on-russian-gas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Al Jazeera<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.
