The interview marked Peng\u2019s first contact with a foreign publication since posting her initial accusation against Zhang Gaoli on Weibo, a Chinese social media platform.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite a recent sighting of Peng at an Olympic figure skating event, her initial disappearance is resulting in short-term implications for sports in China. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/lifestyle\/sports\/no-world-tennis-tour-events-china-2022-says-itf-source-2021-12-09\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reuters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> highlights that while China has historically hosted up to 40 World Tennis Tour events in a year, the International Tennis Federation is refusing to schedule a single game in China in 2022. After three weeks without contact from Peng and an email to the IOC \u2018assuring\u2019 her safety that many believed was coerced by the CCP, global concern emerged for her welfare. This rise in concern led to the International Tennis Federation\u2019s decision to withdraw from China and, according to the Associated Press, caused a WTA mental health counselling unit to reach out Peng. In her interview, Peng called these actions unnecessary, emphasizing that she does not need help and that her \u201cromantic problems\u201d are unrelated to her status as an athlete.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Beijing Winter Olympics were shrouded in controversy long before Peng posted her initial accusation against Gaoli, which likely impacted the IOC\u2019s response to her disappearance. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2021\/mar\/12\/ioc-under-fire-after-dismissing-claims-of-genocide-against-uighurs-in-china\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Guardian<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> explains that the IOC received backlash from human rights groups and some Western governments for allowing China to keep its Olympic bid in light of the ongoing Uighur genocide in the Xinjiang province. The IOC claims its mission is \u201cto create a better world,\u201d but has failed to meaningfully address the CCP\u2019s complicity in an active genocide and the assumed censorship of Peng Shuai. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/article\/diplomatic-boycott-olympics.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that the United States, Australia, Britain, and Canada are all diplomatically boycotting the Olympics in response to the Uighur genocide, which overshadows Peng\u2019s seeming coercion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the start of the Beijing Winter Olympics, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/06\/sports\/olympics\/peng-shuai-olympics-ioc.html#:~:text=Peng%20Shuai%2C%20the%20Chinese%20tennis%20player%20who%20largely%20disappeared%20from,in%20Beijing%20over%20the%20weekend.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The New York Times<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that Peng attended dinner with Thomas Bach of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to assuage concerns about her welfare. Peng promised to attend the meeting in November after an IOC inquiry into her disappearance\u2014following her initial post on Weibo, neither the Women\u2019s Tennis Association (WTA) nor the IOC could contact Peng. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtatennis.com\/news\/2384758\/steve-simon-announces-wta-s-decision-to-suspend-tournaments-in-china\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">WTA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> emphasizes that the Chinese government failed to address Peng\u2019s disappearance, which occurred immediately after her now-deleted post on November 2, leading to concerns about her safety.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While the WTA called for a full investigation of Peng\u2019s accusation, it is unlikely that any such investigation will occur. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/peng-shuai-controlled-interview-olympics-36722c749b176f228a1db8f39678cc2f\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> reports that in addition to Peng reversing her statement, IOC officials are refusing to go on record on whether the organization believes an investigation is necessary. Peng is connected to the IOC as a three-time Olympian,\u00a0 and China hosting the current Olympic games creates an apparent conflict of interest for the organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Outside of China, responses to Peng Shuai\u2019s disappearance have caused a broader outcry over censorship. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-australia-60121668\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BBC News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> describes that during the Australian Open, Tennis Australia briefly prevented spectators from wearing \u201cWhere is Peng Shuai?\u201d t-shirts over concern that it would be disruptive. This decision was heavily criticized by human rights groups and elite tennis players alike. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-australia-60078517\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">BBC News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> furthers that Martina Navratilova, a former women\u2019s tennis world champion, tweeted that Tennis Australia\u2019s actions were \u201cpathetic\u201d and commended the WTA for being the only organization to take a stand on Peng\u2019s abuse.
