Col.\u00a0Vindman\u00a0gained\u00a0international\u00a0recognition\u00a0when he testified before\u00a0U.S.\u00a0Congress in the impeachment inquiry\u00a0of\u00a0President Trump\u2019s relations with Ukraine. In addition to other evidence,\u00a0Vindman\u2019s\u00a0testimony eventually led to President Trump\u2019s impeachment in 2019 on charges of abuse of power.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The event\u00a0began\u00a0with questions about Lt. Col. Vindman\u2019s upbringing.\u00a0He\u00a0revealed that he\u00a0grew up with\u00a0his twin brother\u00a0\u201cas refugee\u202fkids from the USSR settling in Brooklyn, NYC,\u201d\u00a0adding\u00a0that growing up hearing stories from his father about the Soviet Union\u00a0helped him understand\u00a0that there are places in this world where people have to face fundamental challenges.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vindman expressed that up to graduating college \u201cthere was a lot of energy and very little focus\u201d in his life up until joining the military after he graduated from university.\u202f\u201cThings came to a point of sorts where I was looking to be more disciplined and more focused. [The military] offered me an outlet for all my excess energies,\u201d Vindman said.\u00a0\u00a0Later in his career, Vindman decided to specialize in Eastern European studies. He picked up Ukrainian as a language, traveled through the former Soviet space, received an advanced degree from Harvard University, and became a foreign area officer in Moscow. Afterward, he landed in the Pentagon as a Russian Affairs Officer.\u202fEventually, Vindman became the director for European Affairs on the National Security Council (NSC). He assisted in managing U.S. policy towards Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. Though he described his first year on the NSC as \u201cnormal,\u201d he noted that then-President Trump made certain components of his work difficult. \u201cIf the president was about engaging and being friendly to Putin, the rest of the government was focused on fulfilling the president\u2019s own policy which was countering Russia\u2019s malign influence and Russian oppression,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0Vindman noted.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">He first noticed\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a turning point in policy in 2019, when he saw that U.S. domestic policy had begun to influence national security issues. He first noticed this in reference to the removal of Marie Yovanovitch from her post as the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, \u201ceven though we tried to keep her in her position because she was a terrific public servant,\u201d Vindman said. Her removal was, ultimately, due to a negative tweet by one of President Trump\u2019s sons regarding her lack of support for the president.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Vindman\u00a0further noticed\u00a0similar changes\u00a0when translating<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President\u00a0Volodymyr\u00a0Zelensky, in which\u00a0President Trump congratulated\u00a0President Zelensky\u00a0for his\u00a0political party\u2019s success\u00a0in\u00a0rolling\u00a0out more reforms in Ukraine.\u202fVindman\u00a0said that\u00a0during the phone call,\u00a0Zelensky told\u00a0Trump he wanted to buy weapons systems\u00a0from the U.S.\u00a0to defend his country. According to\u00a0Vindman, President Trump responded\u00a0with\u00a0\u201c\u2018I would like you to do us a favor though,\u2019 and he proceeded to spin out a bunch of conspiracy theories that were unfounded.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vindman\u00a0added\u00a0that\u00a0his\u00a0reverence for the Office of the President\u00a0was\u00a0a\u00a0block\u00a0that\u00a0prevented\u00a0him\u00a0from\u00a0realizing\u00a0that\u00a0Trump was the corrupt actor in this situation.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">After the phone call, Vindman made a report and brought the information to senior officials, who he hoped would be able to convince Trump to reverse course. What Vindman did not know, however, was that in making the report \u201cand doing my job, I started a process that resulted in congressional notification of the president\u2019s wrongdoing.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Vindman explained that Trump took advantage of Ukraine\u2019s position as a country at risk of war which had no choice but to give in to the president\u2019s demands.\u00a0\u00a0He added that the situation was exacerbated by the investigation into current President Biden\u2019s dealings with Ukraine.
