D\u00e9by, who was 68 years old, was visiting the front lines when he was shot. The details of the events leading up to D\u00e9by\u2019s death are uncertain, with the Chadian Military and FACT stating different timelines leading up to the incident. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/04\/20\/africa\/president-deby-killed-frontline-intl\/index.html\">CNN<\/a> reports that FACT troops had overrun a military garrison, and D\u00e9by was shot while fleeing. The Chadian government has denied these claims.<\/p>\n<p>D\u00e9by led Chad for more than 30 years, and allies of Chad, FACT Rebels, and the Chadian government are waiting to see what will happen in the wake of his death. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-africa-56836109\">BBC<\/a> News reports that after the announcement of his passing, D\u00e9by\u2019s son, Lieutenant General Mahamat Idriss D\u00e9by Into, has been named leader of Chad through a Transitional Military Council. This council, which is set to lead Chad for the next 18 months, has raised international concern after dissolving the government and parliament and suspending Chad\u2019s constitution, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/4\/20\/chads-military-announces-new-interim-government-after-deby-death\">Al Jazeera<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In response to the dissolution of the government and constitution, civilians have taken to the streets to protest the drastic change. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/4\/27\/protests-erupt-in-chads-capital-protesters-demand-civilian-rule\">Al Jazeera<\/a> reports that seven people have died from protests in N\u2019Djamena, the nation\u2019s capital. <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/wireStory\/hundreds-arrested-anti-government-protests-chad-77420040\">ABC News<\/a> reports that more than 700 people have been arrested during protests against the new military government on April 30. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2021\/04\/08\/chad-pre-election-crackdown-opponents\">Human Rights Watch<\/a>, during the period leading up to D\u00e9by\u2019s reelection, the government had placed a ban on public gatherings, which led authorities to detain many protesters.<\/p>\n<p>The protests in Chad and the instability in the region have led to concerns from the international community. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brookings.edu\/blog\/order-from-chaos\/2021\/04\/29\/the-death-of-chadian-president-idris-deby-itno-threatens-stability-in-the-region\/\">The Brookings Institute<\/a> states that under D\u00e9by, the built-up military was supported by the United States and France, despite D\u00e9by\u2019s regime being autocratic. Chad has been a leading supporter of Barkhane, France\u2019s military operation against jihadist groups in the Sahel, as well as a leading proponent in the fight against Boko Haram in northern Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>France and the United States have both issued responses to the current situation in Chad. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/04\/23\/world\/africa\/chad-idriss-deby-funeral.html\">The New York Times<\/a>, France\u2019s President Emmanuel Macron stated that D\u00e9by was a \u201cbrave friend\u201d and was the only world leader to attend the late president\u2019s funeral. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/chad-military-council-names-former-pm-padacke-prime-minister-2021-04-26\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports that after the transitional government in Chad established a civilian prime minister, the United States State Department released a statement saying that the move is &#8220;potentially a positive first step in restoring civilian governance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robert Godec, acting assistant secretary of the State Department&#8217;s Bureau of African Affairs, was quoted in Reuters saying, &#8220;We would urge that this moment be taken to move the country forward in a democratic direction and that the people have an opportunity to really have a democracy, have a representative government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The current situation in Chad is delicate, with multiple parties having special interests in the region. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2021\/4\/25\/chads-fact-rebels-ready-for-ceasefire-and-talks\">Al Jazeera<\/a> adds that the FACT rebels who caused the death of President D\u00e9by proposed a ceasefire with the transitional government to engage in peace talks. The African Union has also expressed \u2018grave concern\u2019 over the military government.
