During the fall, we focus on recruiting\u00a0Diplomacy freshmen and transfer students\u00a0who are interested in putting\u00a0foreign policy analysis and critical thinking\u00a0skills into practice,\u00a0learning basic journalism and newswriting, and experiencing a dynamic newsroom atmosphere. As part of their training, new staff members are tasked\u00a0with writing news\u00a0exclusively for the website.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"jobdescriptions\"><\/a>Interested individuals can address their inquiries to\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.edu\/thediplomaticenvoy\/about-the-envoy\/editors\/#web-ed\">Managing Editor<\/a> at <a href=\"mailto:thediplomaticenvoy@gmail.com\">thediplomaticenvoy@gmail.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>What We Do:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailywritingtips.com\/the-difference-between-copyediting-and-proofreading\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Difference Between Copyediting and Proofreading<\/a><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <strong>Editor-in-Chief\u00a0<\/strong>oversees the content and layout of each print issue, and also takes the lead in\u00a0pitching articles for the newspaper and the website. They\u00a0set the\u00a0<em>Envoy&#8217;s<\/em> publication schedule\u00a0and distribution plans each semester. Additionally, the EIC is responsible for the Focus and Alumni sections, which entails\u00a0copy editing\u00a0and assigning articles. Every month, the EIC holds a proofreading session with the Managing Editor and Layout Editor, after which\u00a0the EIC meets the Faculty Advisor for final editing before proofs are sent to the publisher for printing.<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Managing Editor<\/b> handles\u00a0administrative tasks, including the\u00a0<em>Envoy<\/em>&#8216;<em>s<\/em> email, archives, and social media accounts. They are primarily responsible for recruiting new writers, drafting\u00a0editor contracts, and communicating with the staff, faculty, and administration on behalf of the editorial board. They also copy edit and assign articles for the School of Diplomacy News, Foreign Correspondents, and Faculty Spotlight sections.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Associate Editor<\/strong>\u00a0provides support to the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor whenever necessary. They are the lead editor for every article published weekly on the website,\u00a0responsible for assigning\u00a0and proofreading weekly articles within 24 hours. Most importantly, the Associate Editor manages and updates the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/issuu.com\/thediplomaticenvoy\/docs\/envoy_writing_guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Envoy\u00a0<\/em>Writing Guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>News Editor<\/strong> takes the lead\u00a0for all 10 articles in the International News section, assigns writers, and copy edits initial\u00a0news drafts for\u00a0each print issue. The News Editor is the in-house expert for\u00a0AP Style and newswriting, and writes <a href=\"https:\/\/owl.english.purdue.edu\/owl\/resource\/735\/05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leads<\/a>, headlines, and captions for accompanying images.<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Opinion Editor<\/b>\u00a0helps writers assigned to the Opinion section to find their\u00a0voice and express their positions\u00a0clearly and concisely, aside from\u00a0assigning and copy editing opinion pieces. The Opinion Editor also assists the News Editor in copy editing news articles whenever necessary.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Layout Editor<\/strong>\u00a0preserves the uniform aesthetic of the\u00a0newspaper.\u00a0They work with the Editor-in-Chief in designing the layout for each issue. The Layout Editor takes part in monthly proofreading sessions with the Editor-in-Chief and Managing Editor before proofs are submitted to the Faculty Advisor. The Layout Editor is responsible for training their successor, who must shadow them for at least a semester, in the\u00a0<em>Envoy&#8217;s<\/em> graphics preferences and Adobe InDesign.<\/p>\n<p>The <b>Web Editor<\/b>\u00a0maintains the\u00a0<em>Envoy<\/em> website, ensures that links are working correctly, updates information pages\u00a0whenever necessary, prepares all weekly articles for publication on Mondays at 8:00AM, and posts articles that appear in the print newspaper every month. They are responsible for sourcing images and ensuring that each image is properly attributed. The Web Editor is responsible for training their successor, who must shadow them for at least a semester, in managing a WordPress platform and <a href=\"http:\/\/w3schools.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">basic HTML coding<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong>Social Media Liasion<\/strong>\u00a0is responsible for keeping the Envoy&#8217;s Facebook and Instagram up to date. They send out the weekly pitches and keep writers updated on meetings. As part of their social media responsibilities, they promote the Weekly News Brief, a summary of new articles posted\u00a0on the website every Monday at 8:00AM.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Envoy recruits writers through\u00a0a rolling\u00a0application process.
